holiday jobs...
I should have my MA in Linguistics from the University of York by this time next year; in addition I have a CELTA and teaching experience in Europe and East Asia. I have been looking at jobs in Saudi and other places in the Middle East and it seems that they only want TESOL/Applied Linguistics MAs. Are there any exceptions? Where should I look?
Cheers... |

In practice, Saudi employers are rarely as exacting as they may seem on paper. Some jobs will require a TESOL/Applied Linguistics MA, but many will waive this requirement for otherwise suitable applicants. However, if your MA is not deemed to be relevant, you will probably lose out on the salary bonus given to MA holders. |

Yeah, I saw one job offer where they would offer you a bonus if you spoke other languages fluently. I don't know why that was the case.
Are there any other places in the Middle East or North Africa where you can potentially save and make heaps of money for (efl standards of course)? I would be grateful for any tips and links. Is it possible as a single person to save $20k+ in a year? |

I would be surprised if your MA in linguistics was not accepted most places. What you have to be careful off are low grade HR employees who have been given a checklist.
It is possible to save $20K a year in Saudi; the difficulty is to avoid blowing large chunks on holiday. |

What about other countries in the Middle East? Does one invariably live on a foreigner compound? Is a $40k tax free annual salary reasonable or even attainable? |

Try the UAE before settling for Saudi Arabia. If you have three years of teaching experience, US$40 is attainable, but living expenses are steep in the major cities. You would probably save more in Al Ain, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah or the even smaller towns.
I don't think the fact that your MA is in linguistics will cause any difficulty at all with the major employers. Usually those that specify "applied linguistics" will accept degrees in linguistics as well. |

I presume you're looking for a stable job in a tertiary institution. Problem is how much experience you have. If you have ten years justified experience then you should be getting more than $40K with a Masters. Even with a Bachelors you should be pulling in over $3k a month. |

Decide
If you want to save $20K then go to Libya and work in a desert location. The students are normally very humble and motivated to learn but there is sweet FA to do as the locations are away from shops etc... While you work you can finish studies, read, improve sports, learn Arabic and save lots of money assuming you are not married or have kids to pay for.
Once you have tasted life in Libya which is freer than KSA and has a similar climate (though it rains more) you can decide whether to travel to the ME. Try Bell who pay 25,000 sterling or Sirte Oil. The British council were also looking for people.

Advice: I wouldn't repeat that in an interview.
Also, it's true that in theory some employers will ask for the most qualified applicants, but will, in practice, accept much less. My job required an M.A., but recently accepted a candidate who hasn't even finished his undergrad. studies. Go ahead and apply wherever you want, they will let you know "yes or no" long before the hard part (visa application) starts. It all depends on need.
When people run in KSA...they usually "fail to come back" from Bahrain when they get their exit visas. Hence, on any given day there are employers in a pinch, you can get lucky, go ahead and apply. |
