I'm writing this to let others know that there has been a problem for some to fill out/print/get an appointment for the new government cards.
http://www.emiratesid.ae/EIDAWeb/Pages/Templates/login.aspx
In Abu Dhabi they seem to be out of forms at the post offices.
The online forms don't always load properly.
If you want an appointment in AD, there aren't any more. One has to stand in line at one of the two centers and wait. One man at work waited for three days.
The deadline is the end of December. After that it will be impossible to do some things such as renew your car without your new ID card.
I was also told by the service center rep on the phone that we have to bring
1) passport with visa
2) Bar code application
3) a letter from your employer stating you work for them.
Once again, I'm only posting this so if you are having a problem, know that you are not alone.
Good luck. |

Do the math ---- it's not going to happen.
There are more people waiting for cards --- than the capacity for the next 5 weeks (after which ---- the UAE shuts down for Eid and National Day).
I know a guy whose contract is up in July --- but he needs to get the card, so he can use his health insurance. |

Dear colt,
I wouldn't call "Big Brother" a recent arrival to the Middle East. I'd say he's been there for quite a while. In fact, some believe he was born there.

No doubt about that, but now he is institutionalized with modern technology, making him more efficient. |

Dear colt,
Ah, Efficiency comes to the Middle East. Now THAT would be a mind-boggler.

I know I am not comparing like with like but one of the good thing about the Brits, and it's npot always easy to write such a sentence, I think, is that they have not succumbed to ID cards...yet. It has taken more than five years to get a few given out (to foreigners inevitably) and the technology has proven itself completely open to hackers thus giving the lie to any govt BS about efficiency, security and terrorism.
Here...well.... |

The British ID card system is a disgrace. The UK Borders Authority takes hundreds of pounds a year from foreigners (the non-urgent track takes months and costs four hundred pounds, the urgent track takes months and costs six hundred pounds) often completely messes up the details, and is leaving foreigners stranded in the UK unable to travel for as long as five years in one case.
The head of the Agency, on NuLab apparatchick called Lin Homer, attempted to cloud over the disaster in with management gobblygook in an article in The Guardian,
http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/feb/09/ukbordersagency-idcards?showallcomments=true
where she was opposed by nearly all the commenters. My suggestion that she sent her staff off to learn how to do things from the Saudis was one of the politer comments. |

http://www.arabianbusiness.com/546877-id-card-deadline-pushed-back-to-end-2010
Or if you prefer, brief summary of article: expats now have until the end of 2010 to get their ID cards
... so all of you who queued at 5.30 a.m. in the morning to sort it out, or sat and waited listening to the screaming kids, or lay awake at night seriously wondering if they would really stop giving you medical care if you hadn't got your I card (ok, the last one is very unlikely) - well, you could have saved your energy.
If you plan on leaving for good over the next couple of years then maybe you don't need to worry about getting a card at all. |
