Have you done any checking via Google to find out more about Zanzibar? What are you looking for, precisely?
I can offer some knowledge on the type of people you're likely to encounter. Zanzibar is a very diverse place, most being a mix of black African and black/other Arab people. Persian people are also numerous on Zanzibar and in Tanzania.
Do you know any Swahili?
From what I've seen from the package, it looks pretty great. |

Champ,
Lucky, lucky you! I remember visiting Zanzibar after spending the better part of a year teaching in Ethiopia, and falling in love with that magical little island. I too gave some thought (albeit briefly) to trying to find a teaching job there, but in the end I never really did anything about it.
It's a phenomenal and incredibly interesting place. I was there a good seven or eight years ago, so things may have changed. Stonetown is a complex maze of old and intricate buildings; I imagine one would have to live there for quite some time to confidently navigate through it. The cultural mix is tremendous; I seem to remember hearing equal parts of Swahili, Arabic, and Dog know what other languages being bandied about. While Stonetown is a booming little city, I remember traveling to other parts of the island and being quite alone on some spectacular beaches, complete with lovely little guest houses that didn't cost a fortune.
In a nutshell, if I were in your shoes, I would certainly accept the position! Good luck, and let us know what you decide to do. |
