St Andrews ? Full of Hooray Henries from the Home Counties who can't get into Oxbridge. I am an Edinburgh man. That university has a long reputation of producing graduates who love nothing more than a good "disputatio". Benjamin Franklin remarked on that after his visit there a while back.

I will refrain on commenting on 007's post. A servant should not betray his master.

Hmmm,

I don't know anything about Drexel University, but I can't imagine any Saudi university would provide comparable education to a Western university. I have a feeling the ranking was generous.

NB. The Arabic edition of the Arab News - which rarely features the same content as the English edition, praising his majesty at the end of every sentence - claimed that kfupm ranked as one of the best universities in the world.

The oil boom has enabled many Saudi "oases of learning" to team up with American universities.

There was the "Oil for food" program during Saddam's reign in Iraq. I suppose we could call this one KSA's "Oil for Education" prorgam.

Didjaeverhear the funny about the Saudi prince who went up in the Shuttle?

When he returned, the NASA medical staff noticed that he had red splotches on the back of both hands...but nowhere else on his body. They were puzzled at this occurance and ordered blood and other tests to determine how these splotches occurred. Everything came back within normal ranges.

They were puzzled until they asked the prince directly when had the splotches begin to occur, to which he simply answered: "Whenever I went to button push , crewmember would slap me on back of hand...'What mean, you're along for the ride'?"

I suggest a true university is concerned with universal studies and KFUPM, (without any arts faculties?) is a technical college.

Universal refers to the breadth and catholicity of academic disciplines within institutions called universities (spot the connexion between thing and sign??)
Rather than referring to various models and the obsessional spectre of "Uncle Sam" and his histrionic studio, try reading through J. H. Newman's The Idea of a University.

Well, M.I.T. offers quite a few liberal arts:
MIT is a research university committed to world-class inquiry in math, science and technology - but you may be surprised to learn that we require more liberal arts courses than many liberal arts institutions.

All MIT undergraduates, regardless of major, must complete the following requirements in order to graduate:

9 subjects in Math, Science & Technology:
Mathematics 2 subjects
Physics 2 subjects
