King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) ranked 338 (same position as Drexel University, USA!) amongst the top universities of the world according to the Times Higher Education-QS (THE-QS) ranking!
See their press release...
http://www.kfupm.edu.sa/kfupm/gen/pressrelease_eng.asp

UAEU ranked 495!

Well, Uncle Bandar must be proud for the achievement of KFUPM. Laughing

Mama mia - they must have stuck scot47 away in a broom closet somewhere while the raters were around.

(Just kidding, of course - he's probably the main reason they're not 339.)

John

St Andrews ? Full of Hooray Henries from the Home Counties who can't get into Oxbridge. I am an Edinburgh man. That university has a long reputation of producing graduates who love nothing more than a good "disputatio". Benjamin Franklin remarked on that after his visit there a while back.

I will refrain on commenting on 007's post. A servant should not betray his master.

Cambridge.

The campus is full of posters lauding the fact. Nevertheless it appears according to a now locked thread that the night life in Riyadh is better. Perhaps Dr. Al-Sultan can make that his next priority.

Hmmm,

I don't know anything about Drexel University, but I can't imagine any Saudi university would provide comparable education to a Western university. I have a feeling the ranking was generous.

NB. The Arabic edition of the Arab News - which rarely features the same content as the English edition, praising his majesty at the end of every sentence - claimed that kfupm ranked as one of the best universities in the world.

The oil boom has enabled many Saudi "oases of learning" to team up with American universities.

There was the "Oil for food" program during Saddam's reign in Iraq. I suppose we could call this one KSA's "Oil for Education" prorgam.

Well, did not the Saudis, using the oil money, send one of the cousin of Uncle Bandar to space using Uncle Sam's shuttle Discovery!
I guess the Saudi, if they want, could buy the best American University(not education), and transfer it to the middle of their empty quarter without any problem!

And now, Uncle Brown is in the magic kingdom asking for more oil money from Uncle Bandar to help the West and IMF in their financial crisis! It seems the buckets of Uncles Sam and Brown are empty and they need an urgent supply from the Gulf states!

Didjaeverhear the funny about the Saudi prince who went up in the Shuttle?

When he returned, the NASA medical staff noticed that he had red splotches on the back of both hands...but nowhere else on his body. They were puzzled at this occurance and ordered blood and other tests to determine how these splotches occurred. Everything came back within normal ranges.

They were puzzled until they asked the prince directly when had the splotches begin to occur, to which he simply answered: "Whenever I went to button push , crewmember would slap me on back of hand...'What mean, you're along for the ride'?"

Bahaw-bahaw!

But is it really a university??
I suggest a true university is concerned with universal studies and KFUPM, (without any arts faculties?) is a technical college.

Well, I wonder what you mean by 'universal studies'?
If you mean 'liberal arts' as universal studies, then I guess your definition is not compatible with the definition of a 'university' or 'college'. Some colleges in US and UK provide liberal arts studies in addition to technical and science studies.
In addition, the US university model is not the same as, for example, the Russian, the French, or the ME university models!
In addition, who said that 'arts' is a universal study?
The only thing that I know is 'universal' is the Universal Studios of Hollywood of Uncle Sam! And that is really a universal studies of Mickey Mouse films! Laughing

Universal refers to the breadth and catholicity of academic disciplines within institutions called universities (spot the connexion between thing and sign??)
Rather than referring to various models and the obsessional spectre of "Uncle Sam" and his histrionic studio, try reading through J. H. Newman's The Idea of a University.

So MIT and CalTech are 'technical colleges'? The truth is that there are large number of institutions in the list that don't offer the full range of studies; most are science based, but there are others that are business based or liberal arts based.

And even if you go to a university such as Cambridge that does offer most subjects you will still only study your speciality. The only contact you will have with other disciplines is when you discuss matters in the bar or coffee bar.

Well, M.I.T. offers quite a few liberal arts:
MIT is a research university committed to world-class inquiry in math, science and technology - but you may be surprised to learn that we require more liberal arts courses than many liberal arts institutions.

All MIT undergraduates, regardless of major, must complete the following requirements in order to graduate:

9 subjects in Math, Science & Technology:
Mathematics 2 subjects
Physics 2 subjects
Biology 1 subject
Chemistry 1 subject
Lab Requirement 1 subject
Restricted Electives 2 subjects
8 subjects in Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences:
Distribution Requirement 3 subjects
Concentration Requirement 3-4 subjects
Electives 1-3 subjects
In addition, students must satisfy the requirements of their major, the Communication Requirement, and the Physical Education Requirement.

http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/life/music_the_arts/index.shtml

and CalTech:

"Everyone always praises Caltech for its phenomenal science and engineering programswith good reason. But little is ever said about the strong liberal arts education it offers. With my Caltech degree, I moved into the world of writingspecifically reporting. After graduation, I received a masters degree in science journalism and went to work as an editor at Sky and Telescope magazine. With the strong science background Caltech provided me, I was well equipped to converse with scientists about their research. And with my strong liberal arts background, I learned the necessary skills to explain complex research to everyone."

"Caltech is very strong in physics, biology, science, chemistry, chemical engineering, geology, planetary science, and engineering, but we also have a Division of Humanities and Social Sciences, which is excellent. The education is well balanced not only because of our programs in the humanities but because, at Caltech, students learn a lot of things outside of the classroom. The number of extra-curricular activities here is quite phenomenal. Students tell me that they can participate in many more activities than at other institutions. We have students who are accomplished musicians, students who are actors, who are involved in all kinds of sports and social programs, they are very active."
