Hi,
I'm another newbie here and wondered if anyone knows of some good companies to go through to find work in Spain or Italy. I do have a little bit of teaching experience, but it is more tutoring high school kids and training adults how to use websites--though the latter was in a seminar type of environment.
I hope to make a livable wage and am a little turned off by many companies that require a $450 "processing fee". Any suggestions?
FYI
*I am 29, Female, American, I don't have any overseas travel experience but have been to Mexico and Canada (seemed exotic at the time), and I have no certification.
*I am also an experienced publicist and an actor.
*I am not married to the thought of teaching ESL but would really like to spend 6 months to a year in a foreign country and I really like people and care very much about the work I do, so I think I would do well teaching
*but I would be happy to find any work in Marketing, PR, or Theater and Drama.
*I am a college graduate with a degree in THEATER, SPEECH, AND COMMUNICATIONS but with no ESL certification
Any thoughts or ideas would be great!

Hi, from what I've heard, you will need to get certification and an EU passport to work in either Spain or Italy - and apparently its a bit of a challenge for North Americans to get in (but not impossible). It would probably be a good idea to get certified in the country you'd like to teach in, since then you'll be able to get in better contact with schools while you're there - I've read good things about EBC in Madrid on this site, but check out as many as you can. Also, look through the Job Information Journal on this site about Spain and Italy, go to the Teacher Training Forum and you can post but definately read through, and read the postings in the Spain and Italy forums - you'll find so much information, guaranteed!
I'm a newbie too so I can't tell you much, but I hope that helps, and hopefully someone who knows a bit more can help too

Be careful with the Job Information Journals--they can be incredibly negative, almost off-putting. Not just in the sense of delivering bad news, but in the sense of personal gripes, complaints, etc., about just about everything.

People tend to complain a lot more loudly than they praise.
I recently saw an info journal where a fired teacher was complaining about a school I have worked for. He (of course) said it was all the school's fault, but for some strange reason he forgot to mention that he's a raving nutcase who couldn't teach worth beans.  |

I think the caution over whether you will actually be permitted to work in the EU is very valid. Look into this more. Is it workable for you? |

| In both Italy and Spain, you could find illegal jobs, and might even find some legal teaching jobs. For jobs outside of teaching, you could proably have to know either Spanish or Italian. There will be summer camps opening soon, so you can check out jobs there. Apply and see what happens. |

That's the first time I've heard someone call Canada exotic. Maybe an African person saying that I can see, but coming from an American?  Maybe Canada and the US are more different than I thought. Thanks |

| You may want to just go there and try to find a job. It's hard to find illegal jobs from abroad. You wil have no leverage being in America. |

Wouldn't it better just to expel Texas and give the whole lot including Dubya and co back to the Mexicans?
Mind you, that is a slightly mischievous suggestion from a European perspective, it must be the Greek wine I'm drinking at the moment whilst my meal cooks. |

Yeah! being one who likes living in Mexico, I'd be pretty cranky if that <long string of very articulate, distinctly Australian expletives deleted> person came to live here...
