I'm currently finishing up my contract in Korea. Can I get a Chinese work visa easily at the embassy here in Korea, or will I need to return home first?

You have to have an invitation letter from a Chinese employer first. Once you settle on a job they can send you the invitation letter and another doc or two, and as long as you tell them which embassy you want to go to I think it's, post Olympics, no problem. You shouldn't have to go home.

Wait for a more authorative reply here though...

How's Korea?

Thanks for the information, I hope I can get it done from here.

Korea is pretty fun, but I would love to experience China as well. And with the exchange rate these days, they pay about the same.

Aristotle is right, as Aristotle always is/was. As long as the local Chinese mission (embassy or consulate) can issue you your "Z" or work visa, you should be fine. It'll allow you to enter China and begin working. Once in this country there will be some more paperwork -- resident permit, foreign expert cert -- but your school should handle that for you.

Just be a tad careful if your school says something like "get an 'L' (visitor's) and we'll convert it to a 'Z' after you arrive." Many folks have been stung by this when the school never changes it for you. With only the L you'll be working illegally and subject to potential fines and the like.
