The language used in most international schools is English. And they run up to high school level - you might find a niche, though job openings are fairly rare and, to be realistic, usually go to people with connections, I'm afraid. |
That's what I would have thought. If folks are paying lots of money to send their kids to these schools they probably don't want the children taught by newbies like myself. Anyway, now I'm looking into volunteer options. I'm planning to sell my house in a couple of years and purchase a cheaper property that has a very small income. It wouldn't be near enough to survive in the states but it might cover us in another country for a few years while we "experience". And I'll have some savings ready when it's time to come home. I just need to find options that don't expect me to pay for the privilege of working! |

Folks that are willing to pay lots of money are probably just as willing to spend even more to ensure their child receives the services that he/she needs.
Despite what people in the international community might think about the disabled, one would assume that American parents living abroad would want only the best for their own, just as they would at home in the States.
I have no knowledge of hearing specialist positions abroad, but I would assume that you could find international schools that require one. I find it hard to believe that there isn't a single hearing impaired American child living abroad. Who knows, you may find yourself in demand.
You should really try to find out whether or not this is a viable option. You and your child would be much better off than if you volunteered. |

You make a very good point. I have no idea how I'd go about even searching for such a position but perhaps I could begin by looking at sign language interpreter positions in other countries. It's definitely food for thought. Thank you for your input. |

Thanks for the link! I started checking out the site a few moments ago. I think we are going to try to go to Ghana or some place in Africa. From what I've read it might be difficult to find a reputable school for both of us. I still might end up volunteering and homeschooling at least in the beginning. Perhaps a volunteer gig will lead to a paying career. The Deaf schools there appear to use American Sign Language! |

brazilians don't seem to be very concerned with race. africans make up a huge part of brazil's population, and they don't seem to be marginalized. |
