the news media in the US has my family convinced that if they drive down to Torreon they will end up on the news themselves, riddled with bullets or kidnapped.

the gas price and the exchange rate is currently in a perfect setup for them to drive down (250 usd round trip from northern california plus a few toll roads) and the only protest i get is that they heard people are getting murdered or kidnapped...

so, what do you do to relieve the concerns of your family if they're considering coming down?

My parents made the drive (but from the East coast) three years ago. They stuck to the toll roads and although it ended up meaning a more expensive trip, the roads were in good condition and not at all busy. They had no problems.

Granted, things weren't quite as tense as they are now.

Starting now, send them a link from their home town newspaper (or the nearest one geographically that is available online) to every article about a bad/violent event. I mean it seriously.

...i looked, all the way back to 1970. not one murder nor assault in 38 years.

last year, about 35 miles away, a woman killed an 86 year old lady whom she was caretaking. but, she was a few stop signs short of an intersection. she committed suicide in jail 2 years later.

My parents drove down from Ontario to the coast of
Oaxaca a couple of years ago, with no problems to report, except for the usaual structual car damage from the usual culprits
los topes.
They followed the most important rule of the road in Mexico, don't drive at night.

We're actually considerang a jaunt together down to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua this February.
