I happened to take a closer look at my monthly public transit pass (the ID card that they issue when you first purchase one) and, lo and behold, there is a PESEL number there.

I haven't registered my address/gotten a KP, etc., yet, because I was waiting to get zameldowanie. However, it sort of looks like I now have a PESEL number...

Can that be right? All I had to do was show my passport. They asked for my address but didn't ask for any verification of it.

When I got my zameldowania I was told by the lady that I had a PESEL, even though I had no idea I had one!

Its only for Krakow, in Warsaw you just have to put a number to your ID to have it verified.

No idea for transit passes, but your PESEL number should contain your date of birth in reverse order (the first two digits are your year of birth.) If it doesn't have that, it's not a PESEL.

However, if you've managed to get one without getting zameldowanie, either you've discovered a tasty loophole which you might want to document further here, or it's some sort of randomly-assigned code that the authorities don't know about. You check the validity of the number here;

My first run in with Polish bureaucracy was when I got my temporary residence card, or 'Zaswiadczenie o zarejestrowaniu pobytu obywatela unii Europejskiej'.

It's a little piece of paper which I've wisely held onto it seems. They never gave me a PESEL, and there is no PESEL on it. Under 'Numer Ewidencyjny' there is a blank space.

I showed them this when I went for my Zameldowania. The lady looked at it, typed my details into a computer and told me I had a PESEL. I just plugged it into that link and it's 'poprawny' so all seems good. I assumed so, because I used it when I applied for my NIP and there were no worries there.

Oh and my PESEL is my birthdate in reverse order, plus 5 other digits. Seems legit.

Sorry, false alarm.

My transit pass does indeed say "PESEL," but following it is only my birthdate, not the additional five numbers.

Thanks for that PESEL verification website either way, that'll come in handy I'm sure.
