I'll be moving to Prague (from the US) at the first of the year, enrolled in Oxford TEFL's Jan 5 course. I'm curious as to how much money I should have saved up before then. I have accommodations set up for the first 5 weeks. After that I'll need to rent an apartment, get my visa/permit, etc. Assuming I won't be receiving my first paycheck for several months, how much money should I bring?

Hi Kate.

I feel most of your questions will be answered here:
http://www.expats.cz/prague/t-207351.html

I would just like to add that all the major currencies are jumping up and down against the CZK and part of your equation will be at what exchange rate you will be changing your money at.
This is a good indicator:
http://www.csob.cz/bankcz/cz/Csob/Kurzovni-listky/kurzovni-listek-detail.htm?Currency=USD&DateFrom=1.5.2008&DateTo=16.11.2008
A few months back for example, the USD hit almost 14 CZK and a week or so ago it almost peaked at 21 CZK.

Enjoy your time at Oxford TEFL!

I'd recommend about $5000, including some spare cash hidden somewhere for a plane ticket back home (many do TEFL courses in Prague, but don't stay) if you are not coming over on a return ticket.

Also, remember that generally during the summer months the language schools close down for about 2 months, so you'll need some cash to tide you over. Some schools may promise you work over the summer months, but don't take their promises for granted. After all, it's not their problem if they change their mind and you can't pay the rent!
