I am a qualified and experienced (2 years) ESOL teacher here in New Zealand. Due to funding cuts, I am likely to be laid off at the end of the year.
The ESOL market is really tight at the moment and I don't fancy my chances of landing another gig in this town anytime soon. I would be keen to land a teaching job overseas but mt debts are greater than my savings, so my question is:
Where can I teach that provide airfares UP FRONT and provide accomodation?
Please try to give me specific schools/agents. "Korea" isn't very useful-
Thanks |

My question is: why not get out from one's debts by using the same methods which huge corporations employ?
Claim bankruptcy. |

Oman.
Sorry, I know you said that such generalizations weren't useful, but honestly I don't know the names of all of the employers (and I don't make it my business to know just in case somebody happens to post a question--it's easy enough to do the research yourself). I just know that generally jobs in the small-town colleges a) don't require MAs, which you didn't mention having, b) provide airfare and housing, and c) provide a decent enough salary for you to be able to send some savings home and still live comfortably.
If you want specific names, just go to tefl.com and select the Middle East. And then check the Oman forum here to see if there's any gossip.
I've got to add that I get really irked when people say, "don't respond with such-and-such because it doesn't help..." They come here for help and then they try to control and limit the type of help they get.

Westgate Corporation in Japan will take you for a 3- or 7-month contract if they have openings. They provide visa sponsorship, and they reimburse for airfare.
To ask an employer to pay your airfare and housing and provide a salary that will help you get out of debt is pushing it.
JET program will pay airfare and you might get partially subsidized or completely free rent (or have to pay it all). Applications will be due soon, but you won't be able to start work until August 2009. |

My thinking is that there are enough freaky kiwis in the TESOL market. |

"Where can I teach that provide airfares UP FRONT and provide accomodation?"
Afaik, only some middle-eastern schools in Oman and Libya, and maybe other states.
"Please try to give me specific schools/agents. "Korea" isn't very useful-"
Sorry - you'll have to do your own job hunt.
So, Oman, as Denise said. It *is* very useful as it narrows your task by an order of magnitude. |

What does this mean? MA? PGDE? CELTA? A weekend at a conference hall at some hotel? Who have you been teaching?

Are you looking to be able to send a 'Mr/Ms. So and So suggested I contact you concerning possible employement opportunities with...' style cover letter?
Sorry, but you are asking for specifics from people you don't know without giving really much detail about yourself. |

If you're looking to go to Korea, I'd suggest a public school job, which is easy enough to find on the Korean job forum.
If you have teaching certification in New Zealand, why not go the international school route? |

It will take 60 minutes of your time to post a resume and send out mass template emails. Use this site, use eslteachersboard.com, whatever you want. You'll wake up the next morning with 100 job offers in Korea, most of which will pay (or reimburse) your airfare and accommodation. If you want the money upfront, may have to fax them a 1-year signed contract. |

You would probably be able to get a well paid and relatively stress free job with the NET Scheme in Hong Kong (http://www.edb.gov.hk/index.aspx?nodeID=262&langno=1). The Primary NET Scheme is fairly stress free anyway. I'm not sure about the Secondary NET Scheme.
The kiwi dollar is weak at the moment. Depending on how much experience you have, you could earn upwards of $100,000 kiwi dollars a year at the current exchange rate. If you're qualified and have years of experience, you'll earn substantially more than that.
There is a wealth of information at the following site: www.hkpnets.org
Good luck,
Nick |
