|
|
Recently I started a thread on these boards asking questions specifically about Wenzhou. I received some useful responses but still it got me thinking that it wasn't the best approach.
So I figured instead of asking about one specific city why not ask about all of China. This way the questions and the answers can be relevant for everyone.
My question is broad, but I think it is a good place to start.
What are some of your favorite cities/cities you would suggest for teaching in China?
If you could list any and all that you would suggest and perhaps some reasons (i.e. cost of living, travel/cultural experiences, nightlife, good place for job, etc, etc.)
I know China is huge, and varies a lot form province to province sometimes but I think a broad question is good, leaves room for a lot of discussion. |

It's really too broad a question as everyone has a diverse opinion of whats nice and not.
So far the nicest city in China I have ever been to is HongKong. |

Ah, another thread months ago. Is Hong Kong to be considered as a CHinese city?
Hong Kong certainly would care for it. And if you ever here a mainland person talk of Hong Kong ...well for instance an ad .. we have offices in every major city of China, also in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and America (something like that)
The thread was Chinese movies. Every Chines eperson I know would not consider Hong Kong to be culturally "a part of China", only nationalistically
I would disqualify Hong Kong as a Chinese city for this purpose. Hong Kong is a part of China the same as |

I am teaching an international business class right now.
Hong Kong, Taiwan are listed as separate "accounting" entries when it comes to China's main trading partners.
Top of my list in MAINLAND would be Xiamen. A nice place to live and work. |

They aren't complete like terms no, but I would say they are closely related. Personally the quality of life I can expect in any given place is going to have a very direct and dramatic impact on my decision to teach there or not, even if it means considerably less money. For example, last year I spent some time working in Guangzhou. I didn't enjoy Guangzhou and would, in all honesty, take 2000-3000 less rmb/month in salary if it meant I was in a city I enjoyed living in.
So I guess I am asking about living, both the cost of living (food mostly) and cultural experiences/places of interest. If this means it belongs on the off topic board then I suppose mods will move it, or lock it and then I can open a new one there. Whatever, for now it's here.
@Ralph Wiggim I also found Hong Kong to be excellent, however I did have mainland China in mind when I made the original post.

Actually that is precisely what I am looking for. The overall demographic on these boards seems to be one made up of people that are mature enough to handle differing opinions without flaming. I am looking for diverse opinions. Optimally many, many people would chime in with their opinions based on their experiences. If they felt so inclined to offer further insight into why they enjoyed one area of China in particular that would be really great.
The question is broad because I'd really like to hear as many diverse opinions as possible. |

Since modern Chinese cities, so often, strike up a rather numbing concrete sameness with one another - many choose their living locations with a view to what lies outside the city and how to use their free time in exploring their local patch of China - stuff like daytrips/tours, how easy is it to escape the crowds and get into some fresh air.
Otherwise a China existence - if you're not committed to some some sort of hobby such as language learning or martial arts - could easily fall between the realms of drinking/non-stop DVD and computer games or just being super-bored!!!! |

If you were to deduct this from your salary. Considering the average salary is 4000-5000RMB you could potentially be earning 1000-2000RMB a month. With this salary I don't think you could or would enjoy any place in China. |

To the OP,
I'd suggest Zhuhai. There's another thread on this forum about it. I've been working here for over 5 years, and I couldn't immagine living and working any place else in China. |

Top cities for me, meaning I would be happy to live and work in any of them as long as the job is 'acceptable', are:
Xiamen
Suzhou
Zhuhai
Hangzhou
Shanghai
Qingdao
Guilin
But really it's all rather subjective. Some of us like cheese and some of us like chocolate. |

I had 8000rmb as the starting figure in my head, so then down to 5000-6000rmb. I know 8 is a little high but I have seen more then a few job postings for 8 each month, most of which where in Guangzhou/Guangdong.

This is exactly what I had in mind when I started this thread. A list like this, but with some explanation thrown in for at least 1 or 2 places.

Once again that's exactly what I am looking for, all the different opinions and taste. |

In Fuzhou, Fujian Province.
I quite like it, apartment's good, standard hours.
Industrial/Car pollution isn't a problem so much as all the building dust going up from all these new apartments being built along the city's river, the Min. Though with all the trucks needed to deliver the building materials for the construction (and their incessant bleeping of horns) one has to put up with it.
Fuzhou is the Los Angeles (in Fujian) compared to Xiamen's San Francisco. |

I've heard this is one of the most expensive cities in China though. How has it been for you? Are there many places you can eat a lot for not very much (i.e dumpling shacks, cheap noodles, meatsticks, etc.) |
