Dear ESL Hobo,

"Obviously there is much more to it than that, is there not?"

Generally speaking, I don't think so. It's serves me pretty well over the decades. Of course, if you want to get into specific, situational dilemmas, then there are all sorts of specific nostrums that could be dispensed. However, what they'll all boil down to (for me, at least) is: Be kind.
And those two words may not be as simplistic as they might seem. Being kind doesn't always mean giving people what they want or think they need. Sometimes to be kind, you have to be strict.

I'm an agnostic, so I can't say much about God. But, if God exists, I'd guess that God is kind to his creation (i.e. the universe(s)), Yet as we all can easily see, this world does not often seem to be a very kind place.

Kindness is not simple.

Regards,
John

Hi John,

If you dont want to join in, fine by me.

Rule number 5:

"Always report any abuse of children" to someone who can do something about it.

Personally I really hate getting involved with stuff like this in a foreign country. But once I saw a bus driver molest a 4 year old girl by grabbing her crotch and pinching it and tickling it for more than 5 seconds, this was a deliberate action.

I reported it to my boss. The next day and there after the bus driver looked at me angrily, but he sure never grabbed that little girl's crotch again.

True,

and it needs to be said, rather than just put under a general catagory.

Dear ESL Hobo,

Since you don't seem to favor "general categories", may I ask what specific category you would out it under? I'd always thought that a "Code of Ethics" would, perforce, need to be general. After all, one of the very first ones says, "Thou shalt not commit adultery", not "Thou shalt not commit adultery with the blonde wife who lives two doors down from you."

Regards,
John

Hahahaha,

Very funny about the blonde wife thing. So why didnt moses just bring down ONE Commandment, "Be Kind". It's because people need guidance.

I wouldn't say a "Code of Ethics" is perforce general.
Don't Lawyers and other professions have codes of ethics that are specific rather than general?

Gotta run for now.
Take care

Dear ESL Hobo,
If you make them too specific (and therefore VERY long), nobody's going to even read them, never mind follow them.
As to why God (or Jehovah or whoever) didn't send down just one commandment, well, that's easy: he/she wasn't as bright as Henry James.
OK, just kidding - the real reason was/is that back then (and today) lots of people need(ed) "training wheels" before they can ride on their own.
Be kind only works for people who can figure out what it really means.
And, as I mentioned in a previous post: Kindness isn't simple.
