I'll be talking to some schools soon in Guiyang (Guizhou) about working for them in the next school year. I was wondering, for contract negotiation purposes, what is a reasonable salary to expect in a place like Guiyang? I am in my second year of teaching now and I have a TEFL certificate and BS. I was in Guiyang as part of a sending organization last year. I got 3500RMB/mo from one of the schools there. They are very willing to take me back (leaving was my organization's choice, not my choice or the schools choice) but the contract they sent me a few days ago says 3500/mo for a salary. I'm getting 5000/mo right now in Taiyuan. I know the school liked me and they know the students liked me. Should I push for 5000 or more?
Thanks,
Mark |

With both your eduational background as well as your former teaching experience, I think 5000+ is a good goal to shoot for. Keep in mind some other factors: hours, airfare reimbursement, medical coverage, school apartment, paid leave. Overall the most important, though, is the school itself. When I came here my monthly was 1500 (!) and I was happy as a clam. In another situation, my pay averaged over 12,000 and I was miserable with a sh*t school with predatory "management." |

If you accept a position in Guiyang, let us all know how it works out for you.
I taught in Beijing but my wife is from Guiyang which is a city we have our business contacts in.
I always wondered how the ESL situation was in the Guiyang area.
PS: The city never seems to sleep, most residents stay out past 2:00 AM even on weekdays. |

You can try to push for 5000, but I don't like your chances. In a place like Guiyang, you should expect between 3000 to 4000. I know its low, but if one monkey doesn't except, there is always another around the corner. |
