Hi everyone. I'm interested in teaching english in Southeast Asia. I'm 100% Vietnamese but lived my whole life in California. I was wondering if any/many/most schools would disqualify me or discriminate against me despite my qualifications.
Well, I haven't become TEFL/etc. certified yet but wanted to consider this issue before I got started in a career in ESL. I have a B.S. and 3 years of experience teaching science at a local high school.
Any thoughts/tips/stories? Are you a "non-white" English teacher or have you met any?
Thanks! |

You will have a harder time getting jobs, but don't let that stop you. There are plenty of EFL teachers of Asian descent teaching EFL in Asia. Basically if a school doesn't want you because you are not blonde enough, then a qualified teacher wouldn't want to work for them anyways. |

The first consideration is your passport. As far as the job market goes, a US passport will get you more jobs than a Vietnamese one. Secondary is your race. Any job that wants a picture of you you can figure to decrease your chances because they want white folk.
As for experiences, do a search (http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/job/search.php) for "Non-white". |
