If you were working on the NET scheme, you could definitely save that ($1K US per month), but with some other jobs, you'd have to be frugal to save that. You'd probably need to earn at least $20,000 HKD per month. Some kindergarten jobs and ELTA (English Language Teaching Assistant) jobs pay this much.

I also wanted to mention that you have to pay 20 percent tax in Taiwan for the first six months. So it won't be easy to earn so much the first six months.

Everybody thank you for your continue posts. I've been pretty busy trying to take whatever odd jobs I can find at home in the meantime.

My update is I am continuing with my application process with GEPIK, which with the market down doesn't pay too well, but I guess it will be my fall-back. I have also looked at the other countries. JZ, thanks for the mention about Taiwan, the financial negatives do kind of deter me (most don't offer any accomodation/air, 20% taxes, need money to start with). I have interviewed with Hess but I have read a lot of bad reviews as far as how restrictive and MTV it is, but I am still looking to see if the pluses add up more than the minuses lol. Do you think on average and living frugally in these down markets, you can save more in Taiwan or Korea? Though I know, no one can really tell whos currency will go up or down.

Nick, your right that the NET scheme sounds great. I am glad that you are happy and paid well in that program. I looked on the website though, and I don't think I fit any of the categories tho lol! I will probably apply for the heck of it (Im very used to job rejection round here lol!), but most likely it might be an opportunity once I get more certifications and experiences (I think all categories want like 2 years), and the application process is long right? I think it said to start like 6-9 months ahead or something, so when is the best time to start to apply for 2009-10? I think here or Middle East might be good 2nd yr to fully pay off my loans and debt.

But yeah, thanks to everyone for their posts, I am continuing to research, apply, and put my best foot forward and if all else fails, I'll take my failsafe and be there in Feb, in no way can it be as bad here freezing cold, our sports teams and any entertainment are horrible and no jobs lol.

Happy Holidays everyone Laughing

Taiwan's currency pretty much moves with the dollar.

At current exhcange rates, even with paying for housing you could probably save more in Taiwan. Also, in my experience it is easier to pick up extra work in Taiwan and you don't have to worry so much about getting deported for it.

amorphous154, if you are going to end up being in the US until next August you should just apply for NET. With the fallen Won, I think the NET scheme is the best opportunity out there if one is not a certified teacher. If one is a certified teacher, teaching in an international school is better.

Glenski thanks for the help with the simple math and the info on Japan. I just watched Lost in Translation and Japan looks like an awesome city.
Uh, it's a country, not a city.

In your last sentence, so do you advice if I go there to have at least 4-5000 USD in savings?
Yes. I advise that.

And to try to secure a job over here mostly by phone interview, right?
If you can't come, that's one way. Fairly rare, and I personally wouldn't trust a phone interview very much, especially since you can't see the site, staff, or body language of the interviewer.

There are other ways, of course, to get a job. Interview in your home country with the (few) recruiters who visit. Or just come here (with proper planning, of course).

I will definetely look into it as I know its a good market and not as unpredictable as Korea.
What do you need to know? The market here is flooded with teachers, the biggest chain conversation school went bankrupt last year (and was partially picked up by another investor), salaries are falling, etc.

I also will research more on JET Programme, but I know its extremely competitive and strict.
Competitive, yes, but if you don't apply, you have precisely zero chance. Strict? How so?

BTW, how is the economy there, do you think the yen will stay strong for the upcoming years, or will that depend on the fickle US consumer market which may have the worst consumer holiday season in years.
If I knew all that, I'd be a millionaire. So would everyone else. The yen bounces between 100 and 130 during the year (typically closer to 110-130). Gasoline prices have come down since August's high, but airfare out of here tacks on an additional $600 to your ticket (I'm told). The government has promised a stimulus package to households, but even the politicians can't agree who gets what, and they completely neglected the foreigners in the first round.
