I've been thinking about coming and teaching in HK after I finish my current degree in 2009, and possibly doing the PGDE in HK.
My question is though, to people from Canada or the US is the PGDE good as an Education degree in Canada or the US? I'm thinking no, but I figured I'd ask anyways. |

I see on HKU's website that you can take a PGDE in History/Chinese History. This year I am graduating with a degree in History, and History has always been a passion of mine.
In order for a foreigner to teach in HK does the PGDE need to be in Primary/Secondary English or could I teach History and English in HK's NET program with a PGDE in History? |

The NET programme is all about English language teaching, although some NET teachers do teach a bit of history or whatever on the side if their schools ask them to. If your PGDE specialises in English it certainly makes you more employable as an English teacher, but many NET teachers have teaching quals in other subjects (like history for example) and some have no teaching quals at all!
To answer your first post, I would imagine that the PGDE in HK is a good qualification and recognised worldwide, though the training is probably less imaginative than you'd get in western countries. |
