We're trying to sort through the regulations on bringing things like DVDs, books, computers, CDs, personal photos etc.... We've checked a few of the sites related to importing, but still have questions and would like to hear from anyone who has brought stuff like that into UAE.
What will customs do? Will they check the whole computer? We've got an external hard drive too, loaded with about 5 years of photos that we would hate to lose.
We don't want to run into any trouble, or risk losing things.
Thank you! |

You won't have any problem so long as they're (a) not pornographic and (b) aren't materials that could be construed as being used for proselytizing. Odds are, you won't even be checked - especially if you're white European/Western |

MsParker.
Helen is right. The customs officials give computers, DVD's a very cursory look. And the only thing you need to be aware of that helen1 didn't mention is, if you are carrying lots of duplicate DVD's which you might be trying to sell.
Other than that, there is very little that they will care about.
If you are worried about the external harddrive with the pictures, then carry it in your carry on... |

For something irreplaceable, like your photos, I'd make a second backup and leave it home.
Sh*t happens. |

Hey, MsParker!
Bringing stuff with you on a plane is pretty easy nowadays (compared back to the early 90's).
Your computer and books should pose no problem; they may want to take a look at your DVDs, if you have a lot of them (when they scan your checked baggage, after immigration). One time, I had a customs inspector rifle through one suitcase because I used my clothes to wrap my DVDs for protection. Once she saw that they were children's titles (the slightly racier material was in a different section), she let me through with no problem. As mentioned above, if you don't have any pornography or items that could be construed as pornography, you shouldn't have any problems.
Now, if you send yourself packages here, that can be a bit of pain, depending on whom intercepts it at the post office. Still, much better than the old days!
Welcome to the UAE! |
