Here again is my favorite Mexican topic. What cultural habits fascinate you here in Mexico? I just bought a cup of ice cream from a street hawker and he told me there was cheese inside. Indeed there were small chunks of queso. Anyone else out there ever have this ice cream?
1) anyone ever see a catholic outside of Mexico cross himself passing a church?
2)Ok, so those soda bottles filled with water ward off canine pissers from dirtying up the street-lined trees. Anyone else got a take on that one?
3) Does the white paint at the base of park trees really prevent bugs from ascending the trunks? Or is there another reason for the paintjob?
4)Do Mexican businessmen ever wear ties other than stripes and cartoons on them?
5) So a business neglects to pay its taxes or doesn�t have sufficient parking spaces for its clients. Does that merit the whole world knowing that it is now �clausurado�?
6) Even the adults drink from a straw!
7)More people own French Poodles than chihuahas.
8)Children who are slow in their class assignments get a turtle stamped on their papers, if they talk too much in class, a bird....if hardworking, a bee. The stars go on their foreheads more often than on their papers.

I'm fascinated the society even functions or anything ever get done by people who would rather put off until tomorrow anything they can do today and don't plan anything past the end of their (uh, how can I say this without being gross? - oh, I know) noses.

What fascinates me about the people of Mexican is their kindest and eternal gratitude for the time I spend teaching them English.

Yes, they are all too frequently late, and that is annoying.

One of my classes is at Deloitte and they have this day called Impact Day where the staff go out to places that need help. They invited me to come along. We went to a center for brain damaged children. Our job for the day was to weed the playground, a heck of a task, and paint the playground equipment.

Being Canadian I worked non-stop and didn't even notice my companions who took a lot of breaks.

Eventually, as I swept the sidewalk clean one of the Deloitte people came over saying "Escoba, escoba . . .and wouldn't stop until I surrender my broom. "Relax, relax teacher," they said. They have photos of this crazy Canadian working away. This event was before Halloween and they are still kidding me about my work ethic.

So, I think the relaxed attitude of the people of Mexico is right on when a northern is retired and looking to take life a little easier.

I'm fascinated by the messed up foreigners that come to Mexico to live at a young age. It makes for good times. I'm in good company.
no cameras, no regulations, do as you please attitude, yet i feel so damn safe compared to cities in the UK

It also fascinates me that, for a place that has well justified distaste and distrust of gringos, I have so many close and loyal friends.

Rather than fascinating, I find it odd how Mexicans have become so taken with Philadelphia Brand cream cheese (and its many imitations) that it's even used to make sushi rice rolls. Just one taste was enough to keep me from trying this perversion of Japanese food a second time! But considering the considerable sweet tooth that most Mexicans have, perhaps it's not so strange after all.

Even after four years, I still can't believe the insensitivity Mexican newspapers have for the families of tragic death victims. Pictures of bloody corpses including children scream out from the daily newspapers as if Mexicans crave the images. Truly a brutal side of this society.
