20 Desires for a good Q of L;

1 Gym access when you're NOT working.
2 Tennis courts that DON'T close on the weekend.
3 Green space / mountains / ocean a short ride away.
4 'Old' streets that are actually old and not refurbished, boutique lined, cobblestone streets with 'tourist prices'.
5 Views that are actually viewable and not restricted due to smog / haze / pollution.
6 Street eats that aren't deep fried, battered, boiled or stink to high heaven.
7 People that actually look before stepping into the street.
8 Drivers who DON'T park right in front of the doorway 'cos they're too goddamn lazy or too self important to walk a few meters.
9 People who are actually able to chew with their mouths closed.
10 Outdoor cafes.
11 Pleasant restaurants with good food.
12 Bars with patios.
13 Sports bars.
14 Bars.
15 Movie theaters less than a half hour away by scooter.
16 Ditto Carrefour.
17 Reasonable rent on apartments.
18 Reasonable cost of living.
19 Decent wage.
20 Not too many hours.

Where IS the best place to work in Taiwan?

If I was starting over again I'd consider Taichung. Good weather, good looking city (it's relative), lower cost of living, central location, fairly clean.

The two reason why I don't move there aren't on your list so they may not be important to you. I've heard that adult students are not plentiful and the expat community is a younger, harder playing, more transient group the Hsinchu crowd.

With regards to Hsinchu and your list above:
1-3. Yes
4. Yes
5-9 Ignored
10-11 Yes, in Jubai, a 20 min scooter ride away.
12-14 Don't know, don't drink
15 Yes
16 No, you'd have to settle for an RT Mart, Giant (sp?), Jason's Market place and the expectation of a COSCO in 2009
17 No
18 No
19 - 20 Yes (relative to the rest of the island)

sometimes Taiwan really strikes me as a poor compromise of all the worst of Asian and Western cultures with none of the space, beauty or culture.

Better food in China
More manners pretty much everywhere (except maybe China)
Friendlier people for sure in China (maybe not Korea)
Perhaps the crappiest driving on the face of the planet.
Betel nut spittin fat guys in wife beaters and rolled up dress pants with betel nut blood red stained teeth, mmmmm now that's attractive.

What's with the open mouthed chewing?

Dear Readers,

I've been around Taiwanese people for 17 years.

I find Koreans, Japanese and especially Mainlanders to make MUCH more noise when they eat...

Any scientific studies on this? If not, how about your opionions...
