I applied to TBI, but have heard nothing. They require a degree, and unfortunately I can't interview face to face, as I'm not in Indonesia.
I am honestly thinking of teaching at EF for a year to get experience, finish my degree, and then moving on to a better school. Is this feasible, or will I be chained to a desk, while being savagely beaten by the Dos, grading papers until the dawn, for slave wages?
Again, thanks for all of your input. |

You should think very carefully about doing that. You only have to look at the previous posts to know this is probably a wrong move. |

Finish your degree first: it'll make you more marketable. |

Good point, I worked for an EF school once which didn't even ask if I had any teaching experience at the interview. Was okay for the first few months but by the end had less than half native speakers (the rest Indonesian and Indian) and a non Native DoS. Became a joke in less than 12 months. Needless to say I moved on to greener pastures. |

Just curious - what is the (unofficial) hourly rate for part timers or those working overtime at EF nowadays? If someone has the figures for TBI that's be appreciated as well. Both for Jakarta. Cheers |

And these people were, undoubtedly, better qualified and more experienced than those replaced
In this era of Global English, the pseudo qualification of native speaker is no longer a qualification to teach language. Those who were taught are now becoming the real teachers of language, and they will become the new demand in this ever-growing market.
I am, after being enticed by the Visit Jakarta ad, coming to Jakarta. I am an old-school BA.ed from decades ago, but I couldn't care less for that. I am coming to find true happiness at EF SWARA. |

Well Mr. Magoo was half-blind and stubbornly refused to admit there was a problem Is there actually any ex- swara employees who don't have a bad word to say about them? |

I am half blind. I only have sight in one eye: my left one to be exact.
I am aware of the problems relating to life at EF: that is all I can confess to right now. I just hope my DOS is a drunk womanizer, and that my house is loud and lively, and that Jakarta will provide me with the happiness which I seek.
As far as I understand, I will entertain children, get paid, and have some fun. This does not require a degree in rocket science and is hardly taxing. My weekends will be filled with frivolity, playfulness, and inconsequentiality.
Where is the problem in that |

I had a pretty good experience at EF Depok actually. I know EF get a bad rap, but I can't say a bad word about these guys other than the typical disorganization that comes with Indonesia and a big organization (relatively).
I have to say they were helpful, they treated me well and with respect, made sure i felt at home, they paid me on time and the right amount, the DOS was a good guy and the staff there were generally very friendly and helpful. I made a lot of good friends and my colleagues bar one or two were awesome.
The only thing I'll say in critisism is the way they treated their Indonesian teachers. Apart from that, everything was fine. |

True!!! The DoS at the new EF Karawaci is Chinese Indonesian which is claimed to be American-born Chinese. This deceives the students. Agree???? |

Yes jaksamania you are correct! You work for EF Karawaci which is one of three schools in the EF West Jakarta ownership. I previously worked for EF Meruya which while having an English DoS (very poor one at that), they hired quite a few Indonesian teachers and threatened to fire them if they didn't tell the students they were from a western country. One guy told me he was told to say he was a Filipino Amercian (cos he sort of looked that way).
The school I worked for with the Indian DoS is EF Cibubur which wasn't a bad place to work for the first six months but degenerated after that.
Pretty poor form if you ask me. |

Sorry laughing_magpie06, I never worked for EF and EF has always been on my last list. I have friends who work for the new EF Karawaci and they're very discontent with the DoS leadership and the management. Merry Christmas!! |

Jaksamania should get his/her facts straight - the DoS is a jolly nice, thoroughly professional, and very ENGLISH lady, Miss Jo. I must declare a personal interest, as Jo is a good friend. Having met the staff at EF Karawaci - a top bunch, I might add - I did not detect any underlying discontent.
Perhaps jaksamania was referring to the Centre Manager, Marwan, who is also a nice bloke, though not a personal friend. Or perhaps the object of opprobrium (guess who got himself a thesaurus for crimbo) was Hendry, the owner of EF Karawaci and EF Depok, who, though he has his faults - and let ye who is without sin cast the first stone - is also a nice chap.
Toodle-pip!
p.s. jaksamania - where did you learn your English? Perhaps you can still get a refund...
