That's so sad. I sure hope my Masters in TESOL will net me more than this! |
Not really, having a master's in TESOL gives you a great foundation to teach at the university level. The problem is that the universities pay the lowest salaries in China.
The big bucks are in the international school circuits that require a home country teaching license.
Thus, a master's degree holder is paid less and considered a less desirable teaching candidate than a 4-year BA/BS degree holder with a teaching certification.
Universities have lower hours but in the last few years university hourly positions have been increasing. It's normal to be expected to work 20-hours and additional office hours. In the future, it's possible university positions will approach the same 40-hour week IS/IB schools expect.
I've found having a MA Ed in TESOL will get you more hours and more flagship courses and programs. Unfortunately, these are often unpaid or expect of the few legit MEd holders that the universities can recruit.
In other words, having a master's in TESOL gets you more work and the more difficult positions/groups in China, often uncompensated.
The ME is more lucrative and rewarding for Med holders than what can be typically found now at most Chinese universities.
Most contracts will simply state a salary of 300-500 RMB (monthly) higher for a teacher that holds an advanced degree.
This is all very sad but true, maybe in the future this situation will change.
But.......I wouldn't expect any change soon. |

That's strange, because the research that I've done has yielded very different results.
A Masters in TESOL generally, as SnoopBot said,

And these are positions as DOS and similar positions. All of these positions do pay more. Much more.
A quick look at the job forums here will show you some DOS positions that are offering 15,000+ a month. |

DOS positions often pay more and usually demand a MAEd in TESOL. The problem is that most DOS positions are Chinese held only. This leaves very few openings for the Laowai groups.
Hopefully, this will change in the future too. |

I doubt very much if more than a handful of properly qualified teachers get to work in a real 'academic' environment here. Please ANYBODY put your hand up if you have students who could understand anything about linguistics. My hand is not up, by the way.
If you want to earn real money you need to get into a company or good private school with a real curriculum; steer dead clear of anyone who says they want you to teach 'oral English': that means the job is for anyone who speaks English. If you want to have lots of spare time, however, you will not get that and the big money. You can have one or the other, but not both and probably not with intellectually stimulating work. Personally, I do need to save but I'm not willing to slog 20 to 25 teaching hours plus other duties.
If you weren't female I would suggest my position (I am able to live on 2000 a month, here), however, I'm leaving mid-contract because I'm a single woman and there is no social life here. Now, if you could transform into a bloke, even an old, ugly fat one, - no problem - just get yourself a Chinese girlfriend. Free Chinese lessons thrown in. (Most of them don't bother to learn, I notice).
China is not the place to come for a big salary in teaching. I would go for the Middle East if I were you but be very careful and do lots of research to check if you're picking a lemon (I can't because I'm over the recruitment age). Best of all, get out of teaching if you can. |
