Hi everyone
I was hoping someone can give me some advice.
Im moving to Mexico in 2009, i have my flights booked so no going back! Ive been offered a job, but im not sure if its right for me ie. not in my ideal location. I would really like to go to Oaxaca, Veracuz or Taxco.
I have a BA degree and a CELTA and a bit of experience. If i was to just turn up in Oaxaca, Taxco or Veracruz in February how easy is it to just find a job there and then? Ive written off to schools in these places without much luck. My funds are pretty low so thats why im leaning towards the job that I have already got but also its a long way to go to be somewhere that isn't where I want to be, so not sure what to do.....
Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks

Can you tell us where the job you've been offered is, without giving too much away to your recruiters who might be reading this forum? What is it about the place that makes you think its not suitable? |

Off the top of my head I can say that your chances of finding work in Taxco are low since it's a very small city, albeit a lovely one, swarming with tourists. You could probably find work in Oaxaca City, but since it's located in one of Mexico's poorest states, pay rates are rather low. Vera Cruz is an important port city, so there might be more job opportunities there. You've picked three of Mexico's neatest cities to visit, but they may not be the best places to look for work. Here's hoping that some other posters prove me wrong! |

I came to Mexico City the week after Semana Santa, 2007, and was offered 5 courses from three different recuiters in three days of looking. |

Once you're here it's fairly easy to get a job in another city if you don't like the one you're in, especially if you're young, free and single. As long as you don't end up in SLP or Torreon (see other thread) you'll be ok. |

are you still in DF? is it possible to get enough work from just one employer? it seems many people are doing odd hours all over the place. |

You should keep in mind that the Mexican economy has taken a nosedive recently (just as it has in most parts of the world), so it might not be as easy to find work here (in the D.F.) as it was when when geaaronson arrived in spring 2007. |

I am beginning to agree with MO39 on that issue as well. My prognosis is that it`s going to become increasingly difficult for ESL teachers this upcoming year, albeit how difficult, remains to be seen. The signs are that Mexico`s economy is beginning to falter and it might seriously affect the EFL market. |

Yes, I've noticed that companies here in SLP, particularly those that export to the US have had to make budget cuts and one of the first things to go are the English classes. Plenty of uni jobs around if you're looking for something that won't be so affected by the economy. |
