a friend working in CR has PM'd me to say that foreigners arent generally wanted/liked in CR by the locals. can anyone give more info on any experiences they have had to this effect? i find it hard to believe, but perhaps with the rise in visa difficulties these days it may???? be true. perhaps that is some indication???? what do you think? are Costa Ricans friendly and welcoming?

I'm not sure where you friend lives or what his experience/background is, but I've been treated with the same respect here, and more, than I could expect for example in my home country of Norway. There are of course assholes here as everywhere else - there's one particular breed that particularly annoys me, who refuses to understand Spanish unless it's very well spoken. I ordered a pizza from such a person last weekend. It was ugly.

Anyway, I'm getting off track. Yes, Ticos are very friendly, helpful and generally cool to be around and get along with. As long as you're not Nica, of course. ;)

Ticos are extremely friendly towards foreigners( except Nicas and columbians) and are very proud of the fact that their country is a tourist/ worker destination. Im not sure about your references, but maybe they would have problems being accepted by any country, those people do exist. I have never been or heard of or experienced anything but kindness here. Costa Ricaa and Ticos have their problems and shorcomings, but friendliness and acceptance of gringos is not one of them
