How would anyone even afford to do an online Masters program degree from a US institution in Mexico??? Most online schools are about $20,000 USD/year.

I think a lot of people either have money saved from working in their home country, have been purposely saving for years while working here, or get some sort of a deal through the school they are working at.

I am currently doing the latter. I pay about $500/USD a course, and get to pick the courses I want. There are about 4 a year, and it takes 10 courses to get the degree, so it takes about 2.5 years to complete (unless I skip courses). It's not online though; an instructor comes down and teaches us on-site (about 30 hours a course I think).

That sounds great Dixie! Can we ask what you're studying? Its a lot more than I'll be paying for my MEd, but I would be interested in the possibility of doing some courses from other schools to fill out my degree.

Are you asking me Alellis? No, my MEd isn't in TESOL and the cheap price is only open to Australian citizens, which I happen to be. I'll be studying online through an Australian university.

University of Birmingham is 2 years half time online, and I think with the exchange rate it's something like US $12,000 for the year. I know that doesn't seem cheap, but hey, I'm trying to come up with $30,000/year tuition and expenses to go to University of Sheffield in person. Sad
Birmingham has MA Applied Linguistics as well. Not a US school, but British Schools seem to have much less BS built into their MAs. Also, because it's online, you don't have any worries about applying for student visas. General entrance requirements seem to be 3.0 GPA.
Have you applied for student loans? It's a lot to pay back, I know.

well I am a senior in college now and I already have student loans. I will work next year in order to pay most of them back and then see if I can go to Mexico Smile I just do not want to take out more right now and have the interest go up...I want them out of the way!

Americans can do distance degrees from other countries too. Some of the options from England used to be cheaper--not sure now due to currancy devaluations. There are also degrees in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. The main forum here or the teacher training one, might be a good place to get some opinions...
