Computers seem to always work everywhere though you may need a plug adapter. Printers are often an issue...
As to household items, unless your new employer provides a big shipping allowance - which few educational institutions do - it is cost prohibitive. Appliances and TVs are reasonably priced and easily available.

Since Australia is located beneath the Equator, in order to work properly, electrical products brought here from there usually work best when they're placed upside-down...except for toasters.
I only joke about this is an Aussie colleague of mine insists on hanging a a Mercator-projection map of the world up-side down and insists that the map is right-side-up.
You folk "down under" sometimes crack me up!

Dear NCTBA,
Slight correction:
"You folk "down under" sometimes crack me down!"

If it has a motor or a heating element --- don't bother.
I would not waste money moving cookers, appliances, etc.
I'm not aware of many electrical items that are unavailable in the UAE.
In fact - televisions, computers, and DVD players are cheaper in the UAE than where we come from (and they're not zone-coded!). |

Does anyone know from personal experience if electrical appliances from Australia (specifically TV, fridge, computer) work over there without problems? Thanks |
Don't all appliances either operate on 110v or 220v?
What is special about the appliances down under that are any different than appliances in any other part of the world?
I would think they would work fine in the Gulf...just check which voltage they use before plugging in to the power source |

Yes, the voltage is the same in the UAE as it is in Australia, so everything will work. You will need to get outlet adapters or change the plugs as those are different. |

Check whether the TV systems are compatible. There are websites to find this information. I believe that the Emirates is one of the PAL systems, but be sure to get the up-to-date information.
There are likely very good reasons that no one bothers to do this other than the expense. Adding adapters and using them long term on large appliances may not be a good idea. I would consult a professional licensed electrician rather than a group of English teachers.

Unless I'm mistaken, I believe that only North America (to include Canada...I'm not sure about Mexico) and Japan employ different versions of the NTSC standard, with the rest of the world using the PAL standard with the lone exception of France (what's new? ) which uses the SECAM system.
Anyone correct me if I am wrong in the interest of upgrading my knowledge.
OP, it's still advisable to operate your toaster unside-down
Ta!
