Folks: Is Dubai to Abu Dhabi commute a sensible solution to the current ever-increasing and almost out-of-reach housing costs?
Thank you for responding |

I knew someone at the Petroleum Institute, which is on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi, just outside the island (if I recall correctly, or at least very near the bridge) who was commuting from Jebel Ali. Drive fast and that may be viable if you are, in fact, on the mainland outskirts of AD. |

You are working in Abu Dhabi, plan to park your wife in Bahrain according to another thread, and wish to commute three hours from the most expensive place for accommodation in the world to the second most expensive! Anything we're missing. |

Why under the sun would you want to pay to live in Dubai instead of AD?
Both of them are EXTREMELY expensive to rent in, and horrendous to drive through.
and the housing crunch isn't just in AD.... it is throughout all of the UAE.
Find a villa/flat on the outskirts of AD, save that 2 hour commute and the head aches with it. |

I think that the two posts above go a long way to fleshing out my sinple response. BTW, you asked for responses in your OP...not explanations. Obviously, I've left that to the others...

All:
I always appreciate your time/post.
(Stephen Jones) Clearly, you seem bent on trying to piece the life history of the contributor together simply by reading posts from this forum. No, I do not plan on parking a wife (non existent) in Bahrain, and commute from Dubai to work in AD. I was simply trying to help another colleague and his spouse who were considering an offer in Bahrain. Perhaps a little fresh air will do you some good!
(NCTBA) : Being abrupt and technical didn't show much respect for posting colleague. I believe you could show more class than that.....even for an English Teacher!
(Adorabilly): Your response was most useful. Thank you for taking the time.
(Sheihk N Bake): I appreciate your input always! Thank you |

You're certainly leading the way in showing 'class', Chris.
To answer your question, even though I'm an English teacher, commuting from Dubai to Abu Dhabi would not really be feasible on a long term basis.
In terms of the distance it would have been possible a few years ago, but nowadays the traffic jams would make it too time consuming except as a short term measure.
You would basically be looking at a daily commute of 4-6 hours. |

iffy...
If you don't expect to get responses like this, you need to make your posts more clear. Most people in this section read all of the branches and you will certainly get better, more complete answers, if you ask clear, complete questions. Otherwise it starts to look a bit like trolling and attracts attacks.
I too had assumed that you were a married person looking at jobs in two countries in the Gulf. And putting all your questions together, things were starting to look strange.
To answer the question, I think anyone who drove from AD to Dubai twice a day would have to be a bit insane... and considering the distance and how bad the traffic is, they would certainly up the odds of not surviving to the end of the contract in one piece. Personally no employer could have paid me enough to do it.
I'm curious... are you even a teacher who is looking for a job in the Gulf?

Hey VS.
I actually have a friend here in RAK, who commutes to AD 2 to 3x a week. His job has him working in AD, Dub and in RAK. He lives in RAK because it is sooooo much cheaper, but only manages to work here a day or two a week.
And I would say he is certifiable... He regularly spends two or more hours just to get through dubai each way. |

To (VS, Adorabilly and D. Merit):
Your inputs are very much appreciated. Clearly, the idea of commuting could be costly and stressful. Seeking something on the outsketch sound more do-able. No, I am not an English teacher. Thanks to all!! |

A friend used to commute every day from Jumera to AD and took about 90 minutes max. It was doable because housing is really expensive in AD.
Other friends commute from Al Ain which is exactly the same distance and takes less time but the housing is considerably cheaper.
It depends on where you want to live.

Sounds very much like that attractive commute to "Em-Zed" from AD. OP, I'm sorry that I didn't meet your expectations. In my mind, I wasn't being "technical" or "abrupt". The question was asked and answered. In my world a one-word answer by someone who obviousy knows this part of the world is all I need as I heed voices of experience. But, then, again, I imagine that our ages are ages apart and, I guess, I need to cater more to the youth that has come after me. My generation was given nothing...everything was earned. That's the way I think.
It is, I guess, a Brave New World. I promise to try to live up to your expectations and requirements in further posts.
I, remain, humbly,
NCTBA (by the audacity of some) |
