To me they are equally valid but have different meanings.

If you 'quietened the room' it would mean you purposely got people to hush up before launching into your zapiekanka diatribe.

If you 'quieted the room' then I take it to mean just as you intended, i.e that others were lost for words due to your bitter attack on zapiekankas.

I saw a chick at the market today holding 3 of the dam things.I hope she wasn't going to eat them all herself!

I bet she had a thick-necked,zywiec wielding boyfriend, hanging out at the beer stall waiting for his grub. Very Happy
