I'm currently in Korea, and having just finished my job my boyfriend and I are considering making the move to Vietnam. He's Australian and white. I'm American, born and raised, but with Filipino ethnicity. In addition I've got about 2 years of experience, no certification, but am considering the CELTA once I get there. What are my chances?

It's been a bit of a problem here finding jobs in Korea because of my "Asian background," but what about in Vietnam? I'm a bit concerned because... well, Filipino looks a lot more like Vietnamese than Korean, so would my chances for finding employment be worse?

Hi,

having a CELTA would help you, especially as you don't have a degree, but your native English and being female would make up that shortfall.

work isn't so easy to come by at the moment because of student numbers falling. Expect to be paid less than a cauasian face. fact of life.

you'll face about the same discrimination as you have found in korea.

However, i do know filipinos who are in secure and well paying jobs.

all the best

euroteacher, can you elaborate more on falling student numbers?

This may mean less students, less classes and less hours.

A large language school with an acronym with 3 letters that starts with a "V" is now hiring Filipino/a teachers. We think they are recruiting from the Philippines, itself.

They pay them 50% less, and load them up with hours, as the school knows it better than what they can earn back in P.I.

I think this poster will find work. Native speaker, female, 2 years experience.

Ok, my school has been offering heavy discounts these last few months, but uptake is slow. Yes, the looming Tet may have some bearing on this, we'll know soon?

the promotion the school is offering is very generous, a bargain most people would snap up, but it doesn't seem like people are registering. Few classes are ready to open as they need at least 10 students to do so.....not a great number?

The Filipinos i know are at 'kosher' International Schools, earning 3 thou plus. Sure, they put in the hours, but so would i if i could earn that!

The school u mentioned is not my cup of tea.

cheers my dears

Thanks for the reply, euroteacher. I want to hear what's happening.

There was a Filipina teacher at my school, seemed to be OK for her! CELTA will help but it's generally not necessary in HCMC.

Good luck!

there are a lot of Filipino teachers being paid the same or even got higher rate than Caucasians in HCMC.

because you are a Filipino- you should be well-experienced in teaching, got better qualifications, have native-English language skills equivalent and got good looks

finding a job shouldn't be difficult then:)
