Thanks to VS, Neil and CMP45. Well said, as always. Indeed I did not suffer the terrible conditions in Sohar. I'm sure they were untenable but that doesn't reflect a jot on my experiences here in Nizwa. I am still grateful every day I wake up in this beautiful place and make my way through the various challenges and delights of work and life here. Nothing's perfect but this place suits me down to a T.
I am continuing to love every day here and plan on doing so, especially as it seems to gall certain individuals so very much . |

Just saw this post (after a long absence from this forum) and was intrigued enough to track back to the original posting that set this and other postings off.
I enjoy - no, make that love - living and working here in Oman. God, I have made so many good friends, Omani and expatriate. And by expatriate, I do not mean only westerners: Indians, and Sri Lankans, and folks from widely assorted African countries.
I see people on this forum complaining about their working conditions. I wonder, how were they such fools (or naifs or dummies or innocents) to go traipsing off to another country singing la-la-la without ensuring their own well-being?
Before I came, I did the basic research, checked with websites such as this one, gathered such first-hand information as I could, then made the jump. It was my own decision, and I vowed that whatever came, I was the one who had made the decision. So, no complaints.
I had a really terrible employer at first. But I survived, found a better spot, and never blamed the country for my personal misadventures.
If anyone is reading this and thinking about coming to Oman, I heartily encourage you to do so. But, leave your cultural baggage at home. Accept being in a new, different milieu and find your place in it. Do some research about your new job, same as you would do at home. Make your decision.
And shut up. |

Carnac, your words reflect the experience of a lot of us here.
Oman, you either love it or hate it. I think there are more pros than cons here. But, then again, we are in our fourth year here, having gone through more than our fair share of trials and tribulations, we still love it.
That is Oman and the true Omanies.
There have been times when our tenancy here was questioned, but when we won a landmark case against a former employer, we knew we should stay. So here we are, for as long as we can.

I disagree. I believe in a more balanced approach. I am happy here overall--happy enough to stay in Oman after I left my job in Nizwa--but there are days and events that leave me scratching my head and thinking about life after Oman... (still another two-ish years away for me).
Honestly, at the risk of offending people, I think that anyone who thinks that everything is perfect or anyone who thinks that everything is sh*t just isn't seeing things clearly. Oman, like everywhere else, has its good points and bad points. For me, happiness is just a matter of trying to weigh the good things more heavily.

Denise,
I was referring to the negative posts by those posters we know so well, who would/could not adjust and ended up with a totally negative view of Oman. They said, without using the "hate" word all the negatives things they perceived about this fair land.
The old saying "you can take the boy out of the country, but not the country out of the boy" just about sums those people up.

Don't worry about offending people, to use an old Northern English saying:
"There's nowt *beep* than folk"( the PC in the forum bleeped out the word that I used, quite innocently, it is treated as being "offensive" but really only is a transtative verb of the phonetic "kweerer"
Not a dig at gays, just an old saying before "PC" arrived.
Live, love and enjoy your time in Oman, you will miss it when you leave, not only you Denise, but those who are leaving here with positive vibes.

I actually am enjoying myself here, because I make an effort to enjoy myself. I just don't think everything is perfect. I know those negative posters you are referring to, and I do my best just not to read that stuff. On the other hand, reading posts that claim that everything is rosy, la de da, just sort of amuses me.

"La Di La De La". Sums them up.
Happy New Year to you all.
