Random questions for Americans living in Mexico:
If you are living there for the long term, do you HAVE to have an American bank account? If so, why?
Also, if your American drivers license expires while living in Mexico, is that a problem? Can you get some type of ID in Mexico as a foreigner?
gracias! |

I dont know of any reason why you have to have a US bank account. Ive been here 5 years and I do still have the one I had from way back when but that is to pay student loans (yes there are people who actually do that!) and the emergency CC card. Its easier to dump cash into the account when my son visits me and can mail the travelors checks then have the monthly payments done automatically. If I didnt have these two items I would not have an account.
Last time I was out of the country (Germany 1988-1992) my then Georgia drivers license expired. When we returned and settled in Mass. I had to retake the written test tho personally I think it was just a way to gouge more money out of me. But I was able to get a new DL, no problem. Right now I have an AZ DL that wont expire until Im 65 so I have no intention whatsoever in getting rid of that one! |

I have an American bank account for direct deposit of my monthly Social Security pension checks. It also comes in handy if I do translation/editing work for someone in the States - my fees can be deposited into my account by the client, and I then withdraw them here from a Mexican bank which is connected to the American one.
Haven't had a driver's license for many years, so can't help you with that.
You can use your US passport as an ID till you get your FM3 or -2, which then serves as your official ID. |

thanks, yeah I have student loans too so you are not the only one, haha. Isn't it hard to pay them off with a Mexican salary? Can passports be updated at American consulates? |

I don't think that passports can be updated, so to speak, but when your current one expires, you can apply for a new one at the US Embassy. I don't know if consulates also offer this service. |

Yes. If you need to have more pages stuck in your passport is an easy thing to do.

Yes, some US consulates can and do process passport applications. I know that in New Zealand the American embassy in Wellington will have nothing to do with American citizen services and will refer all consular services to their branch in Auckland. |

FM2 and 3's do not serve as identification. Just try using it for such at a bank... They want your passport. |
