That's not 500 hours teaching practice; that's 500 hours work.
The contract is for a job. You work 500 hours in 6 months (=20 hrs/wk), the company underpay you and throw in a free apartment (almost all Chinese jobs offer a free apartment), free mandarin lessons (worthless) and a nonsense 'diploma'. |
Exactly. Back when I was at Wuhan Delter I got a silly 'diploma' telling me I completed 500 hours.
I actually left the damn thing in my desk when I came home. |

Some of the posters on this thread say its not evaluated and its unpaid teaching without supervision. If most hours were so, it still would not be so bad since there is no such thing as a free lunch. most people pay 1000's for a a diploma in TEsol and working for low pay for one instead is not a bad thing. A months training is about the same for a Diploma from any other school. One question i have is do they give any supervised teaching practise after the first month and are there regular input sessions throughout the last five months? I think if half the hours mentioned were just low paid teaching that wouldn't be bad better than laying out 2000+ 's for a Diploma course instead.
The other matter about recognition may come down to branding as names like WillExcel and California sunshine school doesn't look good on a diploma to some organisations. These names wouldn't bother organisations in the East but might bother some in the UK. Would like to know where graduates of Willexcel are working these days. most will be in China as it is focused there. Anything else to add?

| After trainees complete their first month of training, they begin their 6-month teaching term at their sponsor school. Details regarding your specific Sponsor School are given to you when you are offered a position in our program. |

There's one month of training to start, then you start your teaching term. Throughout the teaching term you receive feedback on your classes (which I mentioned above). There's also a monthly assignment and feedback session.
There are testimonials on their site, there are also other posters on this site if you search for the school. Run a search for Will-Excel and you'll find feedback from other teachers too. |

I think that's one thing that wasn't mentioned earlier. This course only costs you $200 out of pocket.

I guess this is all subjective. I learned a lot more with Will-Excel than I did in my Oxford seminar, which was basically an extended weekend course.
Really, you get out of anything what you put into it. You could "attend" the best training in the world and still not learn a thing if you sleep through the whole thing. I wanted to (and still want to continue to) learn how to become a good teacher. Therefore, I wanted the extra training, and I feel it paid dividends on my confidence as a teacher.

This depends on your sponsor school, I think. I had regular input and observations throughout my teaching term. I also had assignments I had to complete throughout the 6 months and return, which were graded and returned.

Keep in mind that the 4000 there is the minimum. I was making 5000+ after bonuses and adding a couple hours each week.

Will-Excel may not be a "big name" yet, but they have Chinese government accreditation (http://www.willexcel.com/TESOL/English/About%20Us.htm). Also, Sunshine is a sponsor school, they don't accredit anything, so their name is not on the diploma.

I'm still in China. Have been for 3+ years now. Over the years I've thought of going to other places, and have applied (and been accepted) to schools in Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and the Czech Republic. In the end, though, I just couldn't leave China.
Wish you the best! |

I'm in a hiring position.
If I see this 'diploma' on a resume itz going into the trash bin. It's just yet another private company trying to profit from teacher education.

Gong!
That is not "Chinese accreditation. Stop trying to mislead people.
China has a list, from the Federal government, of accepted schools. This is NOT one of them.
Give me the telephone number of the government office that "accredits this" and I'll call them tomorrow. |
