The killer thread must not die.

Post, or it will disappear.

Certainly we have more essence, don't we?

If this thread dies around about the day I leave Japan, it will be significant. Thanks for your support ntropy but I'm pretty much essenced out now. Ready to discover the essence of Korea in a two year deadline. Your mission, should you choose to accept it...

There is so much to say about Japan. Whether it is the essence or not is debatable.

I am going to move soon so I went to a branch of Sagamihara`s city hall, which is in Sagami-Ono.
I needed a document to give to the rental agent to prove that I really live where I do.
I don`t know what the big deal is. Can`t I just show my Alien card? It has my address on it.

I was confident that it would be a simple thing to get this document.
I have been in Japan for over three years. No problem, I thought.
So I found the office and was told by a female employee that I needed the green form and I had to write my name here and address there, etc.
Romaji for my name is OK.
So I did the form, trying to write legible kanji for my address.

I had to wait, then I handed the form to another person there.
He started speaking a lot of Japanese and I realized that there was something wrong.
He picked up another form and showed it to me and I realized that I had filled in the form for Japanese people. Then why was I given that form by the Japanese woman? Eeeeeehhhh?

Razz

and of course, the form for foreign people was more complicated, especially the part about why I wanted to move to another apartment (a question not asked to Japanese people).
So I knew that I needed help and that I would have to come back the next day.
Just one of those times that I was reminded that I am a gaijin.

So I have a Japanese drivers/driving licence license. Why does that freak people out?

I live in a small inaka town, and I love it. I find people can be REALLY friendly to tourists, and less so to us long termers.. Still things just happen here.

EG. Taking a late night walk and finding a cardboard dinosaur. looked like a brontosaurus, about 2 feet long and a foot tall.

No-one else around at all!!!! Why was it there?

The essence of Japan...

but why..?
It is the Japanese way..

Yeah, but why..?

It just is

But yesterday the way was the opposite.

ah yes, that was the way, and this is the way. That is the WAY.

Confused Question Confused Confused Question

No need to apologise. I meant Japanese people too. Perhaps the word "peers" to refer to my Japanese friends put you off the scent Wink

And, of course, when I say "here" I mean Koreans here.

That KIkkoman cartoon is da bomb. It is a good indicator of Japan, if not the essence... Great post, Canuck2112!

Or when I was an exchange student and my class (the only one) went to Australia for their syuugakkou ryoukou, I had to attend the long, boring orientation eventhough I wasn't going (not allowed to . I joined another class to Okinawa instead) . I even had to fill up forms eventhough they weren't of any use (i mean.. i was going for lawd's sake!) .

And then when the Okinawa-bound students got to leave early to pack, they wouldn't let me go home... bleh.

Yesterday I was driving and an ambulance was coming towards me with its sirens screeching. I stopped as there was a red light in front of both of us. The ambulance stopped at the red light and slowly crept towards the intersection. When it saw that the other cars had stopped for him, he bowed to all the cars around him 3 times each and then slowly accelerated. It took about 20 seconds to go through this minor intersection. Unbelievable! Was there a sale at Mr. Donuts or was there an emergency? Rolling Eyes
