Taken from another thread:
"Teachers should have an oppportunity to pull up their socks and be advised if their socks are falling down. Open and transparent. It works for us. In my experience, problem areas can be fixed, we offer full teacher support to teachers who are wearing loose socks. By offering them support, they support us back. A workable and ethical system."
Do all Gulf institutions have such a fierce dress code? |

Cotton. Acrylic is acceptable when worn with garters. |

I'll never forget the first time I heard one of my fellow teachers, who happened to be Pakistani, tell her class of Omanis that they had to "pull their socks up if they expected to pass!"
Of course, there wasn't one pair of "socks" to be seen among the 25 students... just bare toes in sandals. I always wondered what the students thought the first time she said it.
By the end of the semester it had become a running joke.
I have to say that it is not a phrase that I had ever heard from anyone under the age of my grandmother.

BTW, I think the people who have holes in their socks are VIP people.
Dont you known that the World Bank President, Paul Wolfowitz, Has Holes in his Socks!
While visiting a mosque in western Turkey over the weekend, World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz dutifully observed custom and took off his shoes before entering.

Socks are dangerous in the Gulf, especially if you agree to SHARE accommodation with a person you don't know. You may find that he (probably not she) arrives with only one pair.
BEWARE! |

I really hope you didn't think that was about a dress code. |

Well actually I thought it was about The Uses of Irony in Tefling. How about that for a dissertation topic: The uses and abuses of socks in Tefland: is ironing strictly necessary?
Wouldn't be at all surprised if there was an institution out there that would accept it! |

More than 22 years ago Don Johnson was sockless in his loafers in Miami Vice. That's good enough for me. He's the same age as me but last time I saw, handsomer and more stylish and definitely cooler. Ergo, no socks = cool. Omani students = cool / Properly dressed male HCT instructors = not cool. |
