The good old Hotel Oxford never fails. If rates haven't gone up, you can get a large room for 200 pesos a night. They don't take reservations, so you'd have to drop in on them at Ignacio Mariscal #67 near el Monumento de la Revolucion, or call them at 5566-0500. The cheaper single rooms aren't nice, but the double is great.
Higher up the chain there's hotel Canada in the Zocalo area. I think they are around 300-400 per night. Ave 5 de Mayo #47, 5518-2106
If hosteling is your bit, there's Hostal Catedral in the Zocalo, and R&B south of Zona Rosa. If you want a longer hostel list, PM me. |

Has anyone stayed at any of the Hostelling Internationals in Mexico?
I've stayed in them in Europe and Canada. Affordable and good way to meet other travellers if you don't mind sharing room with strangers. Don't know about the ones in Mexico, but here's the link.

HI is the one behind the Catedral in the Zocalo. It's big and bustling...always lots of interesting people and close to everything touristy in the central part of the city. I don't know about the rooms, but if it's only a place to sleep then it's great for the area you're in. |

The hostel that is better than the Cathedral is one only a half block away at Avenida Brasil 8. Its the Mexican City Hostel.
The service workers at the Cathedral are inadequate. But if you are a party person and like noisy bars, the downstairs in the Cathedral would be the place for you.
Ive stayed for a month at both and strongly prefer the Mexican City Hostel. Thats my own preference. Its a much quieter place, architecturally more interesting with a bigger tv screen and one hour a day free internet service vs. a 21 inch screen tv at the Cathedral with internet you have to pay for, and a tiny kitchen with only one electrical outlet. The bar service downstairs is woefully inadequate. Waiters forget your orders or refuse to serve you quaff if you dont want food. Not my favorite place. |

DO NOT STAY AT B&B MEXICO CITY unless you want all of your things stolen
Bed and Breakfast Mexico
145 Durango
Roma Norte
DF
maybe this will come up on google searches.
their lockers were not and probably still arent secure. i had all my valubles stolen from there. probably by a fellow traveller but it was their fault. i also left a couple of items behind and when returned to get them, they claimed they couldnt find them. |

Ditto.
I had poor experiences with them as well.
Their showers were cramped. The owner is not particularly friendly or helpful. It does not surprise me so much that they were not particularly concerned. |

Angel? Wow, I've heard nothing but great things about him from visitors. I'm surprised to hear this. He is at this moment helping a teacher I know in DF to find a place to live and has been a great help to other foreign teachers I know that mention him. My own experience with him is limited but he's always been a stand-up guy.
I've seen their lockers though. No, not very secure. You need to bring your own lock for a 15 by 15 inch space. Being right next to reception, you'd think it should be safe, but I guess not. |
