Are you entitled to a letter of no objection
when you complete your contract ?

Can a school decide not to give you one EVEN if
you HAVE finished your contract to the end ? Is that illegal ?

ENTITLED??? You are ENTITLED to NOTHING! All it takes over here is a phone call to have you black-listed.

To semi-quote a famous singer. "What's "law" gotta do, gotta do with it?"

Jaded to a certain point, I guess, but I challenge anyone to argue with my feelings... Am I angry with the set of circumstances I find myself in? No! I think that I'm more than a realist than anything else.

Oh, stop it, youngster! I said "phone call"! Grow up!

Does he have a hotline for employers, so they can ckeck on you before even bothering with your application?

You're sexist! Again, youth and a newly-minted B.A. shows it's dignity or lack thereof! Besides, I'm not a "you"...I'm a "me"!

Do you have any first-hand knowledge?

Naw, and anybody can tell from my previous posts...I am a "Newbie"...such as you!

And now, I tire of you, youngster...off with you.

With a finger-flicking motion to the shoulder region.

And, that's why I call myself NCTBA as I CONSTANTLY run into purile entities such as youself. Here's another shot...why don't you call yourself "Keating 5 '96"...except you're obviously too young to remember history! Only old enough to taunt people old enough to call parents!Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

NCTBA... are you staying up too late drinking strong spirits again? Stop picking on the newbies. Shocked

Now to answer the question... is an employer required to give you an NOC? There may be a law, but the reality is that employers pretty much do what they want and we expat teachers have little access to the legal system - mainly because we can't or won't wait around for the year or so it takes for a case to get through the court system. (and I do know a number of teachers who did sue and win against employers, but it took a couple years) For instance, we all get a contract, and we must follow it to the letter... but the employers tend to pretty much do as they please. As long as TEFL teachers remain dime a dozen... so it goes.

The better employers will provide an NOC when you finish your contract, the dodgy employers may very well not do so. If you make enemies in management and burn your bridges - even at the good employers, don't expect to get an NOC. That is the "reality" that NCTBA was talking about.

Yes, there is a government blacklist, but you have to do something really bad to get on it. Break laws... get arrested... get deported... write a tell-all book about Arab culture - just getting fired or resigning won't get you on it.

at HCT Dr T VC is still trying to incorporate a ban on all teachers EVEN if they complete their contract in good standing EVEN if they give proper notice etc. etc. into the contract.

In practice, most teachers resign (as per their contract), keep their mouths shut, and return the following August to join another educational insitution.

There is an unwritten "anti poaching" agreement amongst ZU HCT AUS UAEU but it depends on each institutions needs at a given time.

Some HCT directors, IF they have decided you are persona non grata for real or fictitious reasons will do what they can to block you working for another UAE educational organization, no matter that you followed your contract to the letter and were a competent and able teacher. Are they always successful to that end, no. But that is the risk one runs at certain branches of HCT - and of course, if Dr. T gets his way, the point will be moot.

However, as of my last checking - if you are a teacher at the tertiary level, so long as you have the credentials, references, have completed your previous contracts correctly, and background checks required - UAE law prohibits you're being banned.

So far as I'm aware, an NOC is not required if you follow paragraph 2's strategy - it has to be issued to transfer sponsorship. IF you complete the contract, get your visa cancelled, leave the country and then return - as a tertiary level teacher, you won't have a ban on your passport imposed automatically. Nor will your previous employer be contracted unless they're listed as a reference for your new employer.

As far as the "Newbies" are concerned (and YOU know that I LOVE you!) I was simply trying to bring the OP to ground...as to the youngster... Exclamation Exclamation Exclamation

Dear NCTBA,

What amazes me is how lucky you are to have the PI gig.

I have met lots of oldies who were grandfathered into the profession, having gotten their foot in the door after a defective education, and you have just revealed yourself as one of them. Exhibit A:

Now how many members can actually find the serious errors in just one of your short sentences?

And I'm not a sexist. After all, I picked Sarah Palin.

Perhaps a year in Saudi to dry out would be for the best thing for you, NCTBA.

Now, let's not get this thread locked up until the OP can get more "real" responses to the asked question. Rolling Eyes

It's best you get your visa cancelled and have your new employer apply for a new one when you return in August. If you transfer your visa you may lose out on a few goodies like ticket, relocation allowance.....which can amount to about Dhs 7000. The NOC is usually a formality, even from HCT, unless there are "issues".
