How do moving companies work here?
Do they come to your house to give you an estimate?
Can they store things until a certain date and then deliver them?
Anyone with experiences?
Ideas on costs???
Recommendations for good companies?
Thanks again! |

"Kuroneko" is the most expensive but the best, I think. Used them twice.
A cheaper alternative is "Ant". I heard that they were good.
There are more. Sorry I don't have the web adresses with me.
All of them will come to your house and give you an exact price.
The price depends on how much you have.
I think some might keep you things but I am not sure. |

I just finished moving within the city. My wife made the arrangements, but I believe they just asked how many rooms we had to pack up, brought the boxes ahead of time (so we could save money by packing them ourselves), then they came and hauled it all away. Pretty simple and painless operation that lasted minimal time. |

Do it yourself. I went around collected boxes for weeks and then borrowed a truck. You could also rent one. Get some friends and do it. |

Akabou is it. Red and white trucks with gree canvas rooves. They're everywhere in Japan.
The guy comes with as truck you help him load it up and few hours later your done.
The distance travelled and time involved affects tyhe final bill.
I recently moved from Saitama to western Tokyo. Took 3 hours and about 25k in driving. Filled the truck right up.
Cost me 12,500 yen.
Sorry I don't have the website either. |

Move what where how fast?
Until you answer these questions, my advice will be very limited.
If it's overseas, we have just sent 30 boxes up to 20kgs each with the post office. They come to the door and get it, give you a discount if you send more than 10 at a time and even have optional insurance.
Of course, we did all the packing yourselves but then I'm kind of wary about other people packing my own personal stuff anyway.
I got three exorbitant quotes for the same amount of goods from international shipping companies. The Post Office beat their quotes by about half. |

Thanks for all the tips...
The move is going to be a far one, from Kagoshima area to Tokyo area
Just a one person move...but I have quite a bit of stuff...from my 2LDK but not a crazy amount...biggest items are TV and computer desk.
Many boxes.... |

Well if it is within Japan and not Hokkaido or Okinawa, you would probably be best off with the services mentioned above e.g. arisan etc.
However, I would recommend asking around. Turned out one of my student's parents worked for a local freight company. They shipped all of my colleagues stuff from Nagoya to Kyushu for them. Not bad at all. |

Akabou fliegen rocks. They responded quickly to my email, gave me an estimate which was on the mark, arrived at the appointed hour, made sure all my stuff was well padded, and with a GPS equiped computer about the size of and weighing about the same as an undefed chihuahua, got me and my burden safely moved.
And I got to ride in the cab and watch the little pointer trace a line on the highway on the little computer screen. Woo! Car ride! Woof! |
