So true!! I perfected my 'disinterested stare onto the ground in front of me' whilst travelling around the middle east many moons ago, but unfortunately it still didn't stopped me being followed home a few times by dodgy looking characters (who my kind neighbours normally chased away).
Interestingly the worst hassle I ever got came from the Mexican-Americans that came back to Michoacan in their droves every christmas. They felt it was ok to shout very offensive and threatening things to me (in English) from their big trucks with Californian plates, and it got so bad I wouldn't go out alone during the holidays and my father-in-law would come and meet me at work everyday to walk me home. I never got anything like that kind of hassle the rest of the year, or when visiting the bigger cities in Mexico.
My husband's theory is that it was some kind of revenge for the racism they get subjected to in the States, as he used to live there and said it was quite common for cars full of white college kids to shout abuse at him.
As for your theories on your dating problems Mo, here's one of mine that might give you hope- I've been happily married for several years now. In a society where it's almost acceptable to cheat on women and be a sexist pig, if you find a guy who goes against the social norm to be faithful and treat women with respect then you've got a real gem. In my opinion he's even better than a British (or American) guy who's like that just because it's what society expects. Keep dating Mo, I had my share of disasters before I met Mr L |

Thanks for the sensible advice, Mrs L. I'm at an age (63) when I never expected to date again, so I was pleasantly surprised over the last year when several men I met expressed an interest in me and asked me out, though with disastrous results most of the time. At the moment, I'm rather worn out from the whole process, but I won't entirely reject the idea of dating again if a promising candidate appears in my life. |
