I am considering teaching in Taiwan, but have read that usually it is up to the teacher to pay his way to Taiwan. Since I'm in Alaska, the cost of getting to Taiwan is pretty expensive (I'd imagine close to $1.5kUS$) I don't feel like plunking down $3.5 k just to get to Taiwan and settle in. After all, I'm going to save money to go to graduate school and the last thing I want to do is go into debt.
That being said, I noticed some agencies (Reach to Teach, etc) will PAY my way to Taiwan.
Do any of you know about this? Or am I stuck applying to jobs of tealit.com and having to pay my way? |

Correct. Employers rarely pay for flight ticket there and back . . . that's up to you.

And you're airfare is just a starter! Upon arrival you'll need to stay in a hotel/hostel and that isn't cheap. Taiwan is expensive; it's not like rocking up in Thailand where you can find all sorts of accommodation for all sorts of negotiable prices.

Be careful when using an agent. Do some serious research at these forums before committing yourself.

There's a cruel irony here: The best chance of getting a job in Taiwan is to be there, so you'll need to spend the money and take the risk of flying there. Getting a job from Alaska is possible if you go through an agent like Reach to Teach, but you never know what you're gonna get. |

I used an agent who promised return airfare when I first came to Taiwan. Being paid an abismally low wage was just one of many problems I had with them. Oh, and I never did get that airfare re-embersed either.
Never sign a contract with a recruiter no matter what they say. Only with a school. |

This is the best advice one can heed. Of the few success stories of naive newbies with recruiters, there are many more unfathomable stories that one can't imagine. If only I had on hour to jot down one horror story. It'd be a page turner.
Now, if one goes with HESS...(do they assist with airfare?) then one can have a reasonable experience while learning the ropes. Chances are far better with a chain school than with recruiters. Don't misunderstand, I'm not advocating chain schools, but they are a step up from the slime ball recruiters.
But if one has any interviews skills at all, come here. It is the best way but somewhat of a conundrum as another poster suggested.

I don't know if HeSS pays airfare. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the tips! |
