I'm looking for people who have any information about Amideast. Does anyone here have any direct (or even indirect) experience with them?

Anyone here ever worked for them? Do you know someone who has?

Any information on this organization would be very welcome.

I know/have known a number of people who teach/have taught for AMIDEAST through the years and have met a few more at places like TESOLArabia. I consider a number of their employees as friends.

Although I have never worked for them, I have heard very few complaints through the years. Probably the major disadvantage is that most of their teachers are part-timers rather than full-time foreign hires. Teacher demand depends on student numbers, of course.

I have met teachers from Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen and I know that they are working on expanding their programs in Jordan and Syria.

The majority of their teaching is directed towards the exams required by US universities - like the TOEFL, SATs and GREs. Unfortunately, I have no idea what their pay scale is-- I just never asked. Hope that helps and perhaps an employee will come on and tell us more.

I had some interest in working for this organization. They in turn had
interest in me, but told me they are a NGO, and no longer provide airfare.

Well, this was a big disappointment, since it is usually the airfare which is the biggest initail expense for a teacher wanting to work in Asia or Africa.

I have worked for AMIDEAST in Aden, Yemen for 18 months. It is a wonderful place to work. Management is American and the office staff are Yemeni, and both are outstanding. The facilities here are great -- a language lab, a large library, teachers' room with computers, Internet access, etc. There are a few native-speaker teachers, some Indian teachers and also some Yemenis, all with very high levels of English skills and teaching skills/experience. In Aden, accommodation for foreign teachers is provided.

We teach all levels of New Interchange, as well as TOEFL prep. courses. There is almost no demand for GRE or GMAT prep here in Aden.

I guess the only drawback is the money. It's not what you could make in the rest of the Middle East. But the students here are, on the whole, fabulous -- motivated and lots of fun. And I have never experienced a problem with being paid late or not paid at all.

To get more information on AMIDEAST in general, you can see their website at www.amideast.org. Tunisia is often recruiting for Tunis and Sousse locations. I can't specifically recommend any AMIDEAST other than here in Yemen, but my feeling is that they would all be honest and fair places to work.
