Hi,

I just got an offer from a school in Riyadh. They are offering:
11000sar (basic salary), 1500sar (housing), 500sar (transportation) and medical benefit. Also, they want me to work double shift for the first couple of months. So is this a good offer?

Sounds like a reasonable offer for a new teacher, but one major questions jumps out of your post: Will the 'double time' be paid as overtime? Or do they just expect you to do it for free? Make sure you find out.

I have to find housing on my own.

That's not at all good, then, as far as housing is concerned. You won't be able to find much other than dumps at that rate.
How about the "double time?" Definitely find out about that first.

Hmmmmm...... since you've said you have to find housing on your own, I reckon I know to which employer you may be going. If I'm correct, may I tell you that there are several threads on said employer already in existence on this board? It might be an idea for your to peruse them.

If I want to rent an average apt. and buy average furniture, how much will it cost me when I get to Riyadh

Is there a deposit needed to rent an apt..

as for the double shift, it is 9-1 and 5-9.

Actually, if he/she would be expected to teach all those hours, it would most definately be a double shift in teaching terms. Fine if you're happy with that and are getting paid double time, but make sure of that before signing on the dotted line.

I've never rented in Riyadh, but from what I understand a decent apartment would cost much more than 15,000SR, more again if you are renting for more than a single person or couple.

Granted. LiiQ, are you expected to teach 9 contact hours a day? That's ludicrous...potentially suicidal!

1500 SR a month for housing is way too low. Not only that, it's against Saudi labor law which states housing allowance should be 3 months' basic salary.
Any employer providing 1500 SR a month for housing and expecting you to work a split shift should be avoided.

For a basic salary of 11,000, the housing allowance should be 2,750/month (equivalent to 3 basic salaries for the year).

You should negotiate with them and ask for that. If they refuse, you can bargain and ask for 2,250, and eventually come down to 2,000 (bargain hard ), but no lower than that.

Perhaps more importantly, you should tell us what school it is, or at least, where the students are from? Is it a Saudi school? Is it a Western-managed Western-curriculum school? Or is it an Eastern-managed Western-curriculum school (unlikely, as the salary is too high for those)?

Your daily working conditions will have a far higher impact on your sanity and staying power here.
