Can anyone tell me the likelihood of finding a teaching position somewhere in Taipei with these qualifications/characteristics:

American-born, but of Chinese descent (ABC)
Poor Mandarin skills, but can get by
BA in Economics from a decent University
Some internship experience, but nothing to do with teaching
Early March (Bad timing, I know, but that's the earliest time without my just bumming at home)
Need any more info?

Thanks a ton!
-Henry

Well, you're asking the right questinos.

ABC- is an issue for many schools but some don't care.
Poor Mandarin Skills - not an issue. Tell schools you have no Mandarin
BA- not an issue
No teaching experience - an issue as this means you have no idea what to do in the classroom
Early March - grim as only schools that have fired or lost teachers will need to be looking for teachers

All in all, you'll likely get piece work...but the important thing is that you have no experience/or training....and don't look western so schools can't flaunt your face.

But as I always think when looking for a job, one job is all that that is needed. So as long as you are lucky and can figure out how to teach, you'll be ok. Try Hess.

On the other hand, unless you have some money to get you through until you get settled, you're in for a rough ride from your finicky ancestors.

You're going to have to work hard and you won't gain the respect of local Chinese. It's all about face here.

The issue here might not be finding work, but rather finding quality work. Someone somewhere will give you a job. Whether you enjoy working at that place though will be another issue.

Try Columbia Consulting Company (don't have its website address offhand). I believe they hire all the year round. You can fill in an application and submit your photo on their website.

Good luck.
