ADSL connections are just fine here, depending on what package you get.

I have taught in several countries, and Taiwan was the best by far. In fact, I may try to return there later this year. All the major cities have fine western restaurants, especially Taichung (where I lived). There are also swell expat bars, many of which, I recall, offered NT100 Tiger beers during happy hour. I drink wine myself, and found the supermarkets to carry fine Aussie wines that didn't spoil in storage (don't buy wine at a convenience store, though). Taxis are plentiful and not too expensive, although drivers often don't know their way around as well as they should. Supermarkets are abundant, and sell good meat, fruit and vegetables. There are also many fruit markets where you can get sliced pineapples cheap. It's a bit humid in summer, but nothing like Malaysia all year round. You can travel to many scenic spots, such as Mt. Ali or Taroko Gorge, and most of the cities have something or other to visit.

You can try Chunghwa Telecom for internet, but make sure you have good antivirus protection.

I really miss Taiwan sometimes ....

internet on the mainland is slower b/c of the gov't censor that all traffic must pass through. that causes a short delay. internet is pretty fast here depending on the package. I download movies and can get up to 800Kb/s realtime downloading.

i personally think taxis and beers are outrageous in taipei. if you go to a bar, you'll almost always pay 150NT a pop. the other guy mentioned 100nt at happy hour, but how many poeple aren't teaching during happy hour? i kNow i and all my colleagues are. taxis in taipei start at $70nt then go up and usually will be a minimum of $150-$200. beers at 7-11 are no cheaper really, with a can at $41NT for the piss and big bottles 700ml at $46 for the piss. they do have heneiken and corona sometimes. if drinking is your hobby, then it will rape your bank account here. if u move here, get a scooter or moto. its half the price of taking the subway everyday and twice the fun uh hmm i mean danger

I find some the previous poster's comments a tad bizarre.

Taxi prices are far from outrageous in Taipei. You can go from A to B anywhere in the city for just a handful of US$s, and that includes rush hour. How many western cities does that apply to? New York? London? Forget it!

As for drinks prices. Come on! 150 NT$s is far, far less than clubs in other Asian cities - try Hong Kong prices! - and as for 7-11 prices I shudder at someone complaining at large beer bottles that costs less than US$1.50!! Poster, what do you expect? The world's best beer for 1.50?

I'm just left with the impression that the poster has some Scottish heritage. Moaning too about Taipei's MTR. Blimey! Cheap, clean, on time. Poster...you stick with the traffic jams, lunatic drivers, and air pollution whilst riding your scooter. Final piece of info....ever heard of the British comedy called Open all Hours? Check it out on Youtube or whatever. You might have something in common with the shop keeper.

Scottish... haha i'm far from scottish, I'm Taiwanese American. You really know how to generalize someone's heritage by a couple opinion's they have. Laughing I made those comments in respect to the living wages an ESL teacher earns vs. the expenditures. yes the taxi prices are comparable to a handful of US dollars but salaries in america (if u can still find a job that is) are much higher there as well.
The comment about drink prices in HK, yes they are more expensive if you go drinking down in Lan Kuai Fong but if u live in HK, you are making more money than in Taiwan. there is a general overall higher cost of living there, therefore the price for a beer is more.
As for 7-11, yes i still think the prices are inflated, like a sin tax b/c beer drinking is not a cornerstone part of the native culture. when i compare it with back home in texas, it is ridiculously more expensive to drink here, plus the salaries are lower here. back home, u go to a normal bar and pay 2-3 USD for a beer where here is 5 USD (AND I MAKE LESS MONEY) that's the kicker, i dont think you took that into consideration.
I think you misconstrued my comment about the MRT here. I was not complaining about it at all. read it again. Riding a moto is more convenient and gas if half the price of an MRT fare to and from work everyday. There is nothing wrong with the taipei MRT, its great, clean, on time, reliable, and people are well mannered, but I was offering an alternative for the OP.

So for the OP, here you have two contrasting opinions. decide for yourself. Cheers!

If you want to have some fun in Hong Kong, make sure you go to Mong Kok. It's where all the action is.
