We see amputations, beheadings and floggings on a daily basis. Very good for the eternal soul,
If your picture of the world is formed by reading the "Sun" and the "Daily Mail" there is no hope for you ! |

Has the thought also never occurred that the reason Shipman got away with it was it was so far beyond the comprehension of everyone involved.
The comments about Sun and Mail readers is quite amusing; I always had you down as a Mail reader or possibly a reader of the Daily Torygraph.
If you feel comfortable in the KSA by all means stay there Scot. A childhood as an expatriate made me realise the degree of unreality around the whole experience and the curious attitudes it engendered in people. |

Equally gruesome punishments were meted out not so long ago in the UK: hanging, hanging, drawing and quartering, beheading and burning at the stake. Charming stuff! Flogging was abolished here as recently as 1948.
As for the Land of the Free, "65 prisoners were executed in the USA in 2003, bringing to 885 the total number executed since the use of the death penalty was resumed in 1977.
Over 3,500 prisoners were under sentence of death as of 1 October 2003." (figures from Amnesty International)
From what I can gather, China's even worse. |

It isn't the first time I've heard scot open the floodgates and vent about the UK. I'm with him. I've spent over half my life outside the country and each time I go back I know why. Sure, it has beauty, it has charm and it has superb history and some great stuff. But the trouble is that for the most part this is obliterated by a sea of apathy, indifference and introspection that is truly terrifyingly prophetic for the future demise of these things in the UK.
It's not the place really, it's the people. It's like they have terminal negativity or something. Perhaps I simply shop in the wrong places |

Shmooj,
Perhaps you keep meeting Scot on his visits? I think criticism from a different perspective is very useful and often a salutary experience. Where I get frustrated with Scot is the way he displays the very negativity to which you allude. |

Well I feel that Britain has been in terminal decline for a long time. You can see evidence of it everywhere you look. "Cool Britannia "? My *** !
I jusat brought up the Shipman case as eveidence of a society where no one is concerned about anything apart from their own private little corner. |

If you are frustrated by his negativity, I feel very indebted to scot. It's therefore posts like his that make mine look "useful". From what I'm able to grasp about our ages, scot has been watching the UK from a distance for a much longer time than I - hence his more concentrated feeling. I think it's only a matter of time before I end up the same way. I won't regret it. The UK has such an inflated reputation here in Japan at least. I try to redress that balance as best I can in class. This will be a fun thing to manage from now on as I begin working for the British Council on Monday |

Does no one recall that story of the West country/Welsh boy who raped his own mother? It was only a month or 2 back. Apparently, he made legal history. |

scot47,
I am puzzled.
Are you seriously implying that the KSA is, on some level, morally superior to GB?
No, I didn't think so.
So what was the motivation for your original post? To share witty and informative cultural observations? To raise an interesting point worthy of further discussion? To make a genuine request for knowledge and/or experience that you have an interest in? To find out other people's opinions on a matter that is topically relevant?
If your aim was to point out that the UK is a crap place to work then fine, I concur! But that can't have been your real objective, there are far more relevant reasons why people shouldn't do ESL here - anyone who wants a comprehensive list should PM me.
Come to think of it, why do you ever post here? The only thing I infer from your posts is that you are bitter, cynical, and unhappy. Furthermore, you seem intent on spreading this negative feeling as much as possible. Is this a bizarre form of attention seeking? If so, then you have won it. |

"bitter,cynical and unhappy" ?
or just realistic ?
Maybe the result of 30 plus yearsw working in this strange EFL business.
Try it and see. maybe you will then outgrow your positive outlook on the wonders of life in the UK. |

Ah so your objective is to condescend?
As clearly stated, I have a far from rosy outlook on life in the UK.
But it would suit your purpose better to assume that I did, being the Clint-Eastwood style "seasoned pro" dishing out hard-earned realisms to naive and unrealistic newbies. Is this the image of yourself that want, and try so hard to cultivate here? I see your role as more of an inflammatory one. People listen to Glenski when he gives advice, but whatever you have to say is usually thrown right back at you, often with explitives. Funny, that, as Glenski doesn't seem like a "rose-tinted glasses" sort of person either.
So you've worked your job for 30 years and you hate it.. What? Do you want respect for that? Should some special level of deference be accorded to you, scot47, because you've spent your life in an industry you apparently despise?
Or is this an online facade? Perhaps in real life you are quite a cheery fellow... I can imagine how spending an hour a day p*ssing off English Teachers on an online discussion forum might be considered good fun for some... |

Mr Leeroy, there are too many people in this game who wear rose-coloured spectacles and see every thing in beautiful tones. An alternative view has to be presented.
You seem to think that because I have a diferent point of view I am wicked or evil or perverse.
But then I should not expect much intellectual sophistication from someone who chooses "Mr T" as his avatar.
If you want a truly negative blast go and read the posts from "ghost" on the Turkey forum ! |

Mr Scot, Seeing as you don't work in the UK, have no intention - aparently- of working in the UK, and little relevant recent experience of working in the UK that might be useful to pass on to a newcomer, isn't it about time you p1ssed off out of this forum and bothered someone else?
Politeness and diplomacy are qualities traditionally highly regarded in this neck of the woods, but there are occasions when they just don't work:
FECK OFF!! |

The passing away of Bnix and the absence of Johnslat leave Scot47 as the "elder statesman" of this forum. His pithy contributions invariably entertain and enlighten, and he doesn't resort to using abusive language.
Carry on posting, Scot47. |
