Hey Glenski,
I realize some of my questions might be more obvious, and perhaps others less so.
The reason Im asking is this..
In talking to people and on the forums a revolving is income, the fact that the glory days of the 80s are gone, and that wages have not risen since. (frankly, i think there ought to be more amazement at how lucrative the industry was back when, rather than how much the market has slide since. iow, perhaps its more a case that the teachers then were a tad overpaid and things are a little more realistic now. just my opinion.).
So Im just trying to get a sense of, with a bit of hustle and pluck, what one can do to supplement an apparently deflated income.
The impression I am getting is that there is definitely room for additional earnings, provided one goes in intelligently and with, as you say, a plan. This coincides with what Im being told by friends back here so, is clearly more room for thought. Ive actually been thinking in terms outside the box if that term is not too dated of how to innovate language instruction.
Doom and gloom seem to be the flavours of the year on some forums so its good to get different perspectives. |

As for teaching at your home or the student's, many people in Japan are embarrassed by the smallness/untidiness of their homes, so it's far less common to be invited to someone's home for any reason here.
Female students are unlikely to want to either go to a male teacher's apartment or have him come to theirs, for obvious reasons (provided their main motivation is to learn English!), and there tend to be more female private students as they have more free time. |

Yes, this is why I asked. |

I remember how weirded out my female privates (can we say that out aloud on the net?) were when I wanted to walk them to the densha station at midnight. Too much living in the States I think. They had no fear of attack, but I just coldn't get over it...well, after a few awkward looks, I soon learned to.

I used to teach at my apartment, to get around this problem, I would arrange to meet at a neutral place first (Starbucks), If they were happy with the trial lesson I would offfer to conduct it at my apartment where my wife would be present (but not participating). This worked out well. |

You're lucky your wife doesn't mind. I ended up giving up the idea of teaching in my office at home as my wife was always annoyed about having 'visitors', forgetting that the visitors were paying for my beer nights . |
