I have to partly agree with you there; in 10 years, I've only gotten about 4 clients directly through those websites, but they were the cream of the crop, not the cut-rate types that dominate those sites. However, BJardIm shouldn't extend that to staying away from those sites altogether, as they are chock-full of good advice to anyone who wants to learn the ropes about the translation world. |
I meant to say that those sites are great for networking (which can also translate into jobs through collaboration with colleagues), but not a good idea if your main goal is getting good direct clients. I was a ProZ member for 5 or so years and only got 2 direct clients, not through the "bidding" system, but because they contacted me through my profile and didn't come asking for my "best rates" (=peanuts).
The fora in both TC and ProZ are great to learn the ropes, no doubt. I still insist on one thing though: beware of the clear trend, particularly at ProZ, of favoring the interests of agencies and not those of the free-lancer. There are tons of forum discussions on that in every language, and it's one of the reasons why many people decided to quit the site. |

| Why not find out what Brazilian businesses have offices here in DF. You could start with shipping companies and those with portuguese names would be the most likely starting point for your search. jump on those websites and send a form email to everyone on the site who has an email address. |

| try searching the ads on www.computrabajo.com.mx. there have been several recent ads for translators. Make sure to type in DF and education where requested. |
