I currently have a Z-visa from last term at a previous school that expires on Feb 12th.
Right now, I am back in the USA visiting friends and family during the break.
My return flight for Shanghai leaves Feb 17th. I don't have a job right now, but I plan on tourist visa'ing it until I land a new gig.
Question:
Can I go ahead and apply for a tourist visa now? Or do I have to wait until my current z-visa expires? |

| I didnt have a problem.. they just canceled my Z visa and issued a new tourist visa all in HongKong.. I didnt have a res permit at the time though.. i decided to switch job after i met some people at a summer camp. |

Here in Changsha you take your passport to the main PSB office, the one whre they tell you not to flirt, preach, or spread your foreign germs. You say you want to stay in China longer than your RP allows and they grant you a tourist visa. I am not sure but I think China only allows 1 year tourist visas now for Americans as a general rule (allows for higher charges you know). If that is true at all it is about 940RMB at least my last one was.
I have a NZ friend who just had this same thing happen to him and he paid around 140 - 170 RMB for a 1 month tourist visa and is going to HK sometime in Feb to get a new Z visa as he is changing jobs next week. |

Ya, I know they raised the price on the visas. $125 for a tourist visa now. I think I paid $50 at the embassy here in the states 2 years ago when I did my first tour of duty. |

I guess it was too late when I read your post last night, but this is the first time I saw that part of your question. As another U.S. traveller I don't think there sould be any problem in getting your visa back home. I would just call first thing Monday to either the agency you will use or consulate/embassy if you live close enough to make sure. I would jurry also Feb 17 is getting real close, unless you wanna spend 2 or 3 days in HK on the way back and get your visa there. |
