| hey there, what are the chances of landing a job in taiwan for a non-native english speaker. I have 2 years experience in tefl, with a tesol cert and a business degree. And although i dont hold a british passport (danish born) i do however speak perfect english, as i lived in england since childhood (i am now over 30). Will this cause any problems? thanks. |

Visas cannot be issued for EFL teaching on Danish passports (US, UK, Canada, Oz, NZ and South Africa only.) There are exceptions but unless you have Taiwanese friends in the right places, or Taiwanese experience, you can't find out about them especially if you have no guanxi. (favor with people.)
You may be employed illegally..and there is some work...mostly problematic (high turnover classes, disorganized mgmt). In the past, teachers could come on a student visa without difficulty. This is still possible but eyebrows are being raised with increasing frequency at the Hong Kong mission where teachers do visa runs, especially after your 3rd or 4th visa run.
In a nutshell, you can do it and it is possible to do it comfortably within the limits of doing visa runs and enrolling in an approved Chinese course. Find out the rules before you break them. Search these forums.
My Swiss friend who did as you hope to do ended up in financial distress and personal disaster. His parents footed his living expenses in TW. At his peak, he worked 12 hours a week. That is but one example. You might present well and that can make all the difference. Looks still count for something here.
Oh, there is one school in Hsinchu that may be able to hire English speakers on other passports. It is a large school with good benefits. It is called ILI (I think.) I believe they have a website.

thanks mytrunk show! thats very helpful, but it sounds a little too risky for me, so i will rethink my plans. Its a shame really, taiwan sounds like an awesome place to live and work and i could do with a change from HCMC  . |

Don't give up yet. Come visit for a holiday and poke around. Check out ILI. They are hiring form time to time and pay quite well, and the job is perky, especially for TW standards....eg, holiday pay, yearly bonus, airfare assistance, housing allowance, etc.

Well I hope that your spoken English is better than your written English.
Of course how well you speak English is of little importance. There are people who know nothing here but since they are either handsome or pretty they have jobs.

True, I do not know where he lives now but if he does not live in England now that sentence is also incorrect. It should read:
I lived in England when I was a child. Since should be used with the present perfect tense.
I don't have a stick up my bum. I just think it is funny that shanewarne wrote that he or she speaks perfect English but made such an elementary mistake in his post. |

He wrote, " I speak perfect English" not "I write perfect English".
Anyways, now that you have shattered the poor fellow's ego (he is a fellow, trust me) what's he gonna do?
You either have to teach him proper grammar free of charge or somehow rebuild his belief in himself.

Or maybe I have seen too many white non-native English speaking Europeans getting paid 600NT to 700NT to teach English while some Taiwanese who have studied for a B.A. or Master's in the United States are only getting paid 400NT an hour. |

shanewarne, I don't want your money but I can give you the number of three agents that can probably find you work if you want to come on a student visa.
You can probably earn about 30,000NT teaching English in the afternoon on a student visa. You can take Mandarin class from 8Am to 10AM and Shida.
If you have any questions just ask. I can answer questions about part time work and about classes at Shida. I even know of a Chinese-Dutch who got a job teaching English in Taipei. I used to work with a Polish girl who taught English. |
