This one is the first round...let's see how bad it is. They at least picked a three-day weekend when many folks are out of town.

The article is a bit amarillista considering they do it EVERY summer in other parts of Mexico. In some parts of SLP you get water one day and the next no for the whole summer. Granted it's not as densely populated but this kind of scaremongering will cause people to start warehousing vast quantities of water when it's not really necessary.

What is rationed in Mexico is common sense - the sheer amount of water you see wasted here is unbelievable.

Very true. I've seen estimates that say up to 40% of the water in the system is wasted in Mexico City due to poor infrastructure.

The UN made 2005 (or 2006?) the Y(e)ar of Water Awareness and since then, the feds and DF government have had ad campaigns up asking people to use water carefully. The city and the feds have been pouring money into big projects to work on the problem, but it may never be enough.

Edited after Loz's smarmy comment. Wink

the Yar of Water Awareness

Did they inaugurate it on International Speak Like a Pirate Day? Wink

What I don't understand is that its not getting much publicity here in DF. I couldn't even find an update on that webpage I looked at when we talked about this before.

Do they think that if they don't mention it, it won't be noticed, or there won't be an outrcry?

We have the water turned off during the day (almost every day) in many areas of Mazatlan, not just the summer. The hotel zone and tourist areas are the priority, so those of us in the working class areas suffer the consequences. The ladies in my neighborhood have learned not to hose down their driveways and streets as is the custom, because, well, they can't when the water is shut off! We don't get alot of rain here so we rely on water storage which fills overnight from the city water supply. Or in the case of one of our neighbors who doesn't pay his water bill, from OUR tinaco overnight! (Cheaper than the electricity he "borrowed" from another neighbor).

Thanks for the second link. It looks like my colonia (Cuauhtmoc in Cuauhtmoc) won't be affected, so I'll be able to take a shower (a quick one, of course, before the hot water runs out) tomorrow and wash the dishes and do a little hand laundry after all. Very Happy

Any affected by this yet? So far, my water is the same as before. I went and filled up several buckets last night.

Maybe this is a big social experiment? Tell chilangos the water is being rationed and watch the hoarding.

I wonder what people will do with any left over buckets of water when the water comes back on on Tuesday? Would kind of defeat the purpose if it just went down the drain, but I'd say that's what the majority of people would do.

(Don't mean you of course, Guy. I know you hold the planet highest in your thoughts.. Wink )

Left-over buckets of water can always be used to flush the toilet!
