I'm planning on taking a CELTA course in Vietnam starting in April. Once the course is over in May I will apply for teaching jobs in Indonesia. I'm hoping my move to SE Asia will be permanent so I put a one way ticket on hold, Los Angeles to SGN (I'm a U.S. citizen). When I went to pay for the ticket the airline said they couldn't book the ticket unless it was round trip. I haven't paid for the ticket yet and I know most countries have this requirement so I'm not sure how I spaced this detail.

Anyway, here's my question! Will the Vietnamese government issue me a tourist visa if I book a one way ticket into the country but also have an "onward" ticket to Bangkok or Singapore? I would be flying into Vietnam with Asiana Airlines but I would be departing with Air Asia, Jet Star, or one of the other cheap airlines.

Personally i live in Montreal Canada and have just (and I mean just) finished booking a one way ticket to Hanoi via expedia. There was never a problem with it only being one way and there has not been a problem in obtaining a tourist visa. In fact the form I had to fill out and send to the embassy only asked for my estimated return date.
I was also thinking about going to Indonesia but decided against it when I realized the difference in pay between these two countries. I have decided to go to Vietnam and try to get a job there and if worse comes to worse then I would re-consider going to Indonesia.
Hope I was able to give you some kind of help. best of luck on your travels.

I don't know if this helps, but last weekend I entered Vietnam with only a one way ticket. My visa is a B3 however.

I also noticed that there was a counter before immigration selling visas upon arrival which I hadnt noticed before.

Some months back I entered on a one way with tourism as my purpose for entry they didnt say anything, but gave me a map of the city.

This time I ticked employment (just to see what would happen) even though I didnt have a contract or anything on me and the same result.

I have more problems on the Australian end when they keep asking me why i keep flying to South East Asia. Wink I dont know maybe it's because I am carry an unusually large sized boogie board bag.

That's odd I had no issue at all. I purchased a 3 month business Visa I think as it says 'for the purpose of business' on my visa. I booked a one way ticket without issue and was told by the Vietnamese embassy in London to just get a 3 month visa and then sort the rest out when I get there.

Yep no RT fare was needed for me. Just had to make sure I printed the VISA invitation off before I set off and gave it to the relevant authorities.

Hardly any hassle at all so far.
